Finally got my first Timing Light.I have used one in high school and know how to set base timing.What I don't know how to do is set advance timing.I want to fiddle with it on my new 360 crate motor.Has vacuum advance distributor.And Total Timing refers to base plus advance? Thanks. larry

get a vac gauge to watch for the highest vac reading while your set the base timing

set it with the most vac you can then back it off one full #

example...19 pounds of vac is max,back it down to 18 and look to see where the base is set

test drive,advance it till it just has a slight ping on a hard wot blast

time light and set the idle air needles just go back and forth adjust curb idle and fine tunning it

way i duz it,i am at 14 base and 19-20 pounds of vac,curb idle at 850 rpms

i can stomp it to the floor and it wont miss a lick getting with it out the hole

& keep slowing the idle speed to where you want it as you are bumping the timing. Then w that (1) initial figure in hand shorten the slots to get (2) 35 total (SB) w vac adv unhooked/capped for intial and total setting then w those set more on to (3) springs then (4) hookup/adj vac adv. More on them later.

Yes base + advance (excluding vacuum advance) = total timing.

vacuum is measured in inches not pounds.
