My 950 has SS check valves undr the squirters that stick when they dry out. Is it ok to use steel balls instead and would they need weights or springs to work right? I lost the front valve while the carb was still on he motor and cant see it in the intake, how scarey is that, would you start it?

YEA start it right up and twist the thing up to 6 grand. Garentee the missing parts and a few more will come out.

If the MODS did their job I would not be hitting the notify MOD button. LOL

Is the engine on a stand or in the car.... were the
throttle blades closed

Its in the car, I assume it came out after I freed it up and blipped the throttle, I havent found it even after the carb was removed.

Do NOT start it! Back off the rocker shafts to close the valves and make note of the valves that were open. Then remove the intake, being very careful and find the missing accelerator check before any start up is attempted. It is large enough that it could very easily mechanically lock up the engine between the head and piston and cause serious damage. The valley tray should keep it out of the engine.

I would find it before I started it. Take the intake off and if your lucky it is in one of the ports with the valves closed, just laying there. Otherwise, I would pull the heads off, not sure if I was awake in science class or not, but if a magnet will attract SS and you are real lucky, maybe you could put a magnet thru the spark plug holes and pull it out. Maybe I'm dreaming on all that, but in the end, I would make sure it ISN'T in the engine. With my luck, I would do all that, and I would find it on the floor.

It was either aluminum or SS a magnet would not pick it up,a flexable scope was used in the runners but I didnt see it.I had a spacer under the carb that has egg crate style holes that might have given it extra angle towards the valves. I hate this kinda stuff.

"Southern" engineer a shop vac with some flexible hose and duct tape and see if you can suck it out. I've done crazier stuff than this before. Worst case scenario, if all else fails, roll the motor over by hand and see if you can figure which cylinder it might be in. The one that had open valves before taking the rocker shafts are the most likely. If you can find which cylinder it's it then concentrate on how to get it out. Might have to ONLY remove one head.

this is exactly the way to do it,but dont give up lookin around the valvecover area somtime a fresh look can reveal somthing, but they usually just plop out and fall in the carb.

Some stainless is magnetic and some are not. 3-series no, 4-series yes. Also cheap stainless will usually stick.
