I think you should review the forums on the MegaSquirt site. There is a steep learning curve but many people have got them to work just fine. I bought a kit about 6 years ago but ended up selling it before getting into it too deep. If you want to learn all there is to know about EFI and enjoy designing and installing it yourself, and sorting out fuel maps etc it will be a great project.
My guess based on your question is that you might want to look into the EZ EFI by FAST. In the end it will probably cost less.

I am thinking of going fuel injection on my 383 Big block, to make it look like Hilborn injection. Are they any good and how easy are they to get work? Thanks Kurt
MS is fine if you are willing to "join the club". What I mean by that is the system is basically a kit with lots of things to learn, people to talk to, and keep track of. It's an open system which is good if you have the bent toward experimentation and engineering. It is also the least expensive EFI solution and it works very well when implemented properly. Certain things such as sequential injection came to MS late but eventually it does get there.
A note of caution about running stack injection with ANY EFI system. Stack injection should use timed sequential injection. Since there is no single manifold with stacks, you should inject just before the valve opens so that the fuel slug doesn't "pop back" through the throttle plate. This happens only at idle but it can be annoying if you don't run sequential
Sequential injection requires a cam signal in addition to the crank signal. You need either a dual-sync distributor or a separate cam sensor.
Finally, you need to accumulate the vacuum from each stack to generate a map signal to run in speed density. You run 8 rubber lines to an accumulator box and tap into the box for the map sensor. Don't even think about running in Alpha-N.

Rich a question on the stacks needing timing: The old Hilborn constant flow system didn't have timed injection with stacks. Why the difference with EFI?

Because virtually ALL stack systems were mechanical running alcohol. Alcohol is very forgiving of overly rich conditions and the rich fuel mixture is harder to fire making any pop back minimal. And this happens only at a lower street idle. Step up the idle RPM and it goes away. Finally most stack systems were not for street use, so you tolerated the idiosyncrasies to get the look and the HP.
Nothing but horror stories from people that tried to get a mechanical stack system switched over to gasoline.

Id love to see a current breakdown of the component costs to do a DIY EFI setup, last time I added it all up it was over 2k with no guarantee it would run. Certainly megasquirt on an GM would be cheaper due tothe wide variety of inespensive components available but for a MOPAR its an entirely different game. Just the cost of the fuel rails and welding bungs tothe intake was over $500.
I have my eyes on the FAST setup.

Learning curve isn't as steep as others make it out to be. Yes, it is do it yourself but there is a ton of support and documentation. Plus you can purchase them assembled and tested so that takes out the assembly part of the equation. I have my 83 1 ton running a Holley 670 throttle body with MS2. The VE Analyzer in Tunerstudio does most of the work tuning the fuel maps. Get it running and drive around while it self tunes. Doesn't get much easier than that. I'm using a wideband o2 so that helps as well.

If you have a port injection manifold the EZ-EFI system looks like this: EZ-EFI system for port injection $825 4150 throttle body with TPS and IAC $540 Sensors (1 bar map, coolant temp, air temp) $60 Injector pricing depends on the HP level. The only restriction is that they must be high impedance. Can go up to 850 HP depending on the injectors.
If you use the bolt-on EZ-EFI with injectors in the throttle body (bolts on instead of the 4150 style carb), that's $1689. Good for 600 HP.
There are other variations (like 2 TB units) but these are the most common.
The electronics have come down in price, everything else is the same. When I started making my system (2002 planning start) nothing existed below about $2000 and the systems 1/2 as good as FAST's systems were 4000+ and the canadian dollar was not favorable to me by about 1.6 times those numbers. If I could have gotten a system like EZ EFI for 825 bucks, I never would have built my own system. I'd say, skip the pain of learning EFI in and out, and go with a no-science degree required systems. MS is cool, but you'll be frustrated and ultimately give up or wish you have bought a better system by the time you finish.

EZ-EFI doesn't support forced induction, MS does.
Something to consider if you are thinking about turbo/blower in the future.
