I noticed today that our Durango has spit grease all over the inner fender. I haven't had a chance to really dig into it, but it's obvious that the outer CV boot is torn.

I don't exactly know how long its been like that, but I haven't noticed anything while driving it and I'm pretty observant so I think this is relatively new.

What should I do? Just replace the whole CV, or try for just the boot?

I've never done a CV before, is there much to it?

Do I need any special tools?

get the whole axle assy , most stores sell them nowadays

We stop repairing C V joints along time ago, the price for full axles is so low that it doesn't make sence to rebuilt them

replacing whole shaft is the way to go. Not too difficult to do. Easier with air tools, but can be done without.

I agree get the whole thing.We also quit replacing the boots years ago.Last 1/2 shaft I got at the shop was about 40 bucks cost.Rocky
