Will this work with the original or does it need to be modified?

All the same after mid sixties. Make sure you use the correct (71) trans mount. And as long as it is the same body type (A body trans to A body or B Body trans to B Body etc.).

I was thinking that a 71 B body took the E body shifter location. Does the 68 model trany have both shifter locations? Randy

No singe B mount. I plan to use the dogbone adaptor and mount it as bench seat pistol grip. I'm using buckets with a buddy seat.

nope that started in 70, i believe (dont know for sure) that the 71 bench seat b bodies used the forward mount like the earlier cars.

Unless you can bolt a 66-69 crossmember in you are going to have to modify the crossmember , the mount location is in a different place , right in the middle of the crossmember. I do not know if there is a crossmember for a B/E body that is not a spool mount ?

To continue on can I change the tailshaft to the later one, dual mount?

You sure can and IMO, it would be the best solution.

, if you can find a truck OD trans that will be a cheap source , just be warned that it will have a 308 bearing , use that bearing instead of trying to transfer the one currently on the mainshaft.
