I am in the process of rebuilding my a833. I just put all new bearings and syncros in. I just read somehwere that you shoudl sand the synchronizer cones with 120 grit sandpaper. Should i do this? i dont mind taking it apart again if its important. What exactly is the synchronizer cone, which needs to be sanded?

I wouldn't worry about it. I didn't do it on mine and it works fine. The cones are the female part that go up against the gear face (which is a male cone)

Actually you want to sand the male surface (the gear side of the cone ) so that the brass syncro ring grabs it to aid shifting. You do not sand the brass stop rings if new.

I think you got that backward. The part you sand in the male cone on the gear. I've done this twice with 220 grit wet-or-dry and it seemed to work. The problem is I don't know of anyone who didn't do it, tried the transmission out, then removed the tranny, sanded the cones, reassembled, and tried it again.

The reason for those "cones" is to create a friction that slows the synchros so that they can blend with the slotted collar that the shift fork is pushing.

Once that surface is glazed/smooth it isn't as effective as something that has a cut surface.

The synchro/brass ring/blocking ring inside surface is knurled for this same reason. It's not the teeth that slow the gears to provide a shift. That's called clatter.

Didn't say you had to sand anything. Just pointed out what the cones are.

I dunno. The OP stated he read you should sand the synchronizer cones. That is the conical section of the gear. I have never heard the synchronizer rings referred to as anything other than 'rings' or 'blocker rings'. No big deal one way or the other.

I thought I had every piece of literature that existed for 833 trannys and I've never seen that. Anyhow, personally I think with the lube in there the slightly scuffed surface wouldn't make the least bit of difference.
