Bought a set of Mr. Gasket steel shim gaskets for a low compression (~8.6:1) 383. How do I prep the surfaces to use these gaskets? I've heard copper sealants of some sort, even silver spray paint

Just spray both sides of the gasket with Permatex Copper-Coat, let it tack up, and install as normal.

the metallic particles seal the imperfections in the head/deck surfaces as they are not mirror smooth

This is what I do w/ them. The silver spray paint works too though...in case you have a can on the shelf and want to save some money.

Did we graduate from the same school????? Associate degree in the School of Hard Knocks.
We didn't have a computer to get others to help on. We had to screw it up all by our selves.

Hello:
LOL Probaly my class room was a Maple tree in back yard and my home work a 1948 Plymouth 4 door sedan (glad i dont have to pay for rechrome on that baby) flat head 6 banger.
And all the tools my back pockets could hold.
Those were the best lessons I could have had.
