Just getting ready to put my car back on the road after 7 years of body work and general refurbishing. Fired up the engine (440 in a 68 Coronet R/T) and the PS pump is leaking slowly around the output shaft. It drips very slowly when not running and when I fie it up I get a light mist of PS fluid on the fender. I gather that the pumps are hard to come by complete, so I figured I would try to rebuild this one, where can I get a kit? I think I see one on eBay for $25 with the shipping, sound about right? Figured I would find one on Rock Auto but no such luck. Not sure if this is an original pump for the car, but I am not concerned with originality, just functionality. Can I just get the front seal, anyone have a number for it?

Thanks in advance.

I rebuilt my Saginaw a few years back with a kit from Autozone. $11.00 at the time...

Maybe I wasn't looking under the right thing, do you have a part number? Problem is that I am not sure what application the pump I have would have originally been used for. I live quite a long way from a "large" auto part store. What model would a guy ask for if I were to get one? If I say a Federal Mopar pump they will just look at me all cross-eyed.

Is the one I am looking for the 5th one down in the Dodge section? It says "Pump Kits / 400-1000 Series / 63-73" for $14.09.

It looks like a rebuild service, anyone ever done that with Rockauto? Or do they just recommend you send one in and if you don't they stick you for $45 core charge?

no dude, that's not how it works. you buy a rebuilt unit from them. they charge you a 'core charge' on top of the cost or the new unit. when you send them the old busted unit, they refund the 'core charge'.

That's what I would have thought too, but it says return and rebuild service only, and there is a 3-5 day time for the rebuild.

Best I can tell it is just the front input shaft seal that is leaking on the thing, but I cant' find a part number on the seal. Anyone have any ideas where to get just that part?

Rock Auto has the seal or a complete rebuild kit.

GATES Part # 348710 Power Steering Repair Kit
W/Chrysler P.S. Pump

GATES Part # 351170 More Information About this Part Power Steering Repair Kit
W/Chrysler P.S. Pump

BE SURE you have the correct pulley puller. You cannot replace the seal without it. It is not keyed on and held on with a nut like the Saginaw pump, it is pressed on. The puller wraps around that big flange and then presses the pulley off the shaft.
If you do decide to get a new pump you MUST remove your old pulley before using your old pump as a core - you will NOT get the pulley with a rebuilt pump!

Be SURE you mean the Federal pump, NOT the TRW pump. They look nearly identical but I have never rebuilt a TRW pump, so I can't say if they are the same. TRW pumps came on some 68 and back big block motors. A TRW pump pulley presses on also.

Thanks for the info. I do have the correct puller and the pulley off already. It is the Federal pump for sure, I found pictures comparing the 2 and you can tell the difference pretty clearly by the design on the back.

I appreciate the info, just what I was looking for. Thank you.
