Just got the new Mopar Muscle, there's an article in there about Passon's new 5-speed overdrive direct replacement for the 833. It's a bolt in replacement but you do need an 18-spline clutch. No moving the shifter or changing the driveshaft crossmember etc from stock locations. I've been waiting for this one for a long time. Time to finally convert the GTX to 4-speed with overdrive!!!! Thanks Jamie!

Have $4K-$5K on hand, depending on what you require to do the conversion

I have a friend with a stroked 340 in his Challenger. He runs a 727 with a Gear Vendors but really wants to make the switch to a manual trans with overdrive. He is always low on bucks and works as many side jobs as he can find, but rarely ever falls into a $4000 chunk at one time. He also has heard of Kiesler customers that didnt like the ratios in the TKO trans. He really cannot afford to waste the money. If the Passon trans has what appears to be ratios similar to an 833 with a .70 overdrive, he could drive a standard 4 speed car to get a feel of the ratio spread.
He is the type that would probably piece together all the stock manual trans stuff and then just buy the trans, shifter and linkage new. I'm sure that this method would reduce costs, right?

Is that the price of the trans? or the price to convert from auto? most already know its expensive to convert to a 4-speed with all the related parts.

Unless Passon has revised his initial quote, the transmission/shifter set-up alone is $4300 IIRC

Well he still sells his 4-sp overdrive gear set for 1800 bucks if memory serves. Gives you basically the same ratios as a 727 with a gear vendors.

Regardless of the price, NOBODY offers the same package with the same advantages, features, and benifits as PASSON.

Maybe if you brown nose Jamie like you do with your other "buddies" he'll give you a deal on one so you can upgrade

as well as the fact Jamie made it a point to produce this tranny in the USA, vs. mexico for a tremec, or korea for the upcoming McCleod tranny....

For a $200 difference, that would mean something to me. For $800-1000 difference, i could care less, as long as it was still a quality piece. Not everything that comes from without is junk... it has more to do with the company having it made, and Passon has a good rep. Even if it came from China, i'd trust him to see that it was a good product.

That said, i sure would like one ov these in my car. I'm selling my 4-speed set-up right now. Come wrench time, i will NEED a new tranny... and its a toss-up between the T-56 that i would rather have... that will be used and cheap, and cheap to piece together (over time), or this Passon kit, which will fit my car, look right, and NOT require hacking (LOTS ov hacking from what i've read)... but cost enough to sideline my car for yet another year.

Still hoping for a small miracle... haha

Not to hijack this thread, but how does the overdrive unit Passon sells work? Does it somehow attach to the 833? What is needed to install it?

TIA

It is a complete replacement 5 speed transmission...kick your 4 speed to the curb, bolt the 5 speed in, and go.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I was inquiring about the add-on overdrive unit that Passon offers. Does it install onto the 833, and if so, does it require any modifications?

Thanks!

it's a new gear cluster, and you flip the 3-4 shift lever, just like the original A833OD, so it still only has 4 forward gears, but now direct drive (1:1) is in the 3rd gear shifter position, and 4th sends power through the countershaft and a .8 (IIRC) OD gear.

Mopar Action has a much better article on the new Passon 5-speed.

I saw someone inquiring on costs. The cost is $4295.00 including shifter mechanism and linkage.
