I don't think I've ever laid a wrench on a slant 6 so know nothing about them. There's more than one size, apparently? How do you tell the sizes? damper difference, distributor location, etc.? Where would the 'numbers' be on one? Thanks!

If it helps, this motor is in '63 Dodge 330 w/a 3spd stick. Thanks!

There's a thin rail w stamped #'s behind the alt & will have 22 for 225 or 17 for 170. Prob need to clean it to see them. www.slantsix.org for more info on /6's. I think the 198 didn't come out till '69 or '70

the engines are basically the same other than the 170 and 190 have a shorter hose from water pump to head.
its very easy to discern the diff of 225 from the other two by standing by battery and looking across at the water pump hose that runs up to the head . on the 225 the little hose is about 4 inches long where as the 170 190 the hose is about 2 " long

Actually it's 170, 198, and 225. The 198 and 225 use the same block, which is a bit bigger then the 170. All engines use the 3.40" bore and the cranks all have different strokes. The heads are all basically the same and most parts interchange easily except cranks and some valve stuff. Later engines used hydralic lifters. All engines used forged cranks until around '73~'74 or around then, when they went to cast.

The G motor(170) has a deck heigth 1.5" shorter than a RG motor(198/225).
The by-pass hose length for the 170 is 1.5", the 198/225 is 3".

Safe bet you have a 225 in your 330. Only the 170 from that era was used in the A bodys (and later the 198). Though some trucks did use the 170...I believe only fleet use.
