99 durango, A500.. customer droped off his truck.. it does not want to shift to 2nd.. not till RPMs are up.. TV cable looks fine.. no codes either.. the truck doesnt idle well and stalls.. Can the TPS cause this trans problem? also can low oil psi cause this? trans fluid looks good..

Please let me know what you all think.. oh when it does shift it doens slip..

One of the O2 sensors likely shorted....probably won't see a code either. Had this happen 3 or 4 times to customers, though they were Ram trucks with 46 RE's.

Symptoms of a TPS problem are different in my experience. The transmission usually shifts normally on acceleration but feels like the torque convertor is locking and un locking during cruise. RPM jumps around a little.

The only electronic control on that trans is the gov pressure along with lock-up and overdrive solenoids. TPS wont effect shift on that trans but as was said will effect lock-up. Sounds like a gov pressure sensor or solenoid problem on the trans problem. Ron

Test the battery.With it not idling well thats a good candidate.They do real odd things if the Battery is going.Rocky

If the engine isn't running right it might be taking more throttle to attain a given road speed and the trans will shift later due to the heavy throttle.

I'd get it running correctly and see if that helps the shifting.

I would check line pressures in the transmission and any sensor values you can see on your scanner. If the engine has a missfire or a fuel trim problem it may effect the trans. Also make sure your speed sensor is reading correctly.

opps sorry it skips 2nd and into 3rd.. goes from 1st to 3rd sooo I guess the band,acumulator or strut rod is broke.. would that sound right????

You got it as I have seen that a few times. It makes you think it hangs in first because all it does to shift into second is apply the band and when the band dont work it just stays in first until you get enough road speed (gov press) to shift into third. Sometimes when this happens its the band that actually caused it because it cracks near the end where the strut lays in the band and causes the strut to fall out. If it is then you have to pull the trans to replace the band. I have seen 2 piece bands that can be put in without pulling the trans but they are not factory as they are an aftermarket deal and are not as good as the standard 1 piece band. What they do is have you cut the band so you can slide it out and then the 2 piece band will slide in because one end comes off. Once the 2 piece band is in you put the removable end back on and then the strut goes in but I dont like them myself and would not use it. You have to cut the band to get it out because they are reinforced at the ends where the strut goes in and wont fit out unless you cut it. Best to pull the trans and do it right. Ron

Before you go yanking that trans I'd drop the valvebody for a look. My '02 Durango R/T all the sudden just started skipping 2nd gear and went to the local dealer here which tried to nail me for a 2500 dollar tranny rebuild. Took it to my trans guy expecting to have it rebuilt but when he dropped the valve body the piece for adjusting the band had fallen out! Got lucky and only cost me 200 to fix! Had the same thing happen in a 727 years ago also. Just letting you know what I went through with ours as I am almost certain that local dealer here would have went ahead and nailed me for a complete rebuild even after seeing the problem...

Definetly drop the pan always before you pull the trans. But remmember if the strut fell out there is a reason. It could have alot of miles and just got so far out of adjustment but thats not usually the cause. And check both ends of the band real close if it did fall out as you will usually find a crack in one end of the band where it is beefed up to support the strut. Ron

Well....we've seemed to have forgotten that the OP said the truck ran bad and stalled. Could be a definite correlation there.
It being an RE trans,and in the '96-'99 range, I'd keep that possibility of a shorted O2 in mind.
But yeah...might as well drop the pan...doesn't hurt to check.
