My son wants more power and a bigger cam in his 71 340 Demon. Currently has an old hyd 268 Magnum cam (180 lbs crankng compression)and a Crosswind (Professional Products?) intake. 99% street car with 727 auto, 355 gears, Dougs headers, manual brakes, mopar performance dist, 770 street avenger holley and a mild stall wich power brakes to around 2400. I told him to install the LD340 intake we already have but he wants to put a single plane on it along with a Mopar hyd 508(?) cam/lifter kit while retaining the stock rockers and springs. I'm not sure this would be the hot set and would need new springs at least, so I am asking for your proven combos. Thanks Moparts members

Yep put the MP .509 with a single plane manifold an watch it turn into a slug. Not enough converter or gear ratio for that deal. If it's got a set of stock springs on it now you'd be best to upgrade them. The combo you have looks ok for mid to high 12's and should daily drive fine. What do the track numbers look like?

Father knows best!!

the old Ultradyne 223/231 on 108 in at 102 would be about as big as I'd go there and that'll work with the vert and gears, the LD 340 is a good one but if the crosswind is the airgap clone you won't tell a bit of difference between them

Overcam and undergearing a short stroke motor is not a good idea, if it was a stick and 4.10's the 508 would work a good bit better but I'd step that up one notch of the ultradyne chart to the 231/239 which is my favorite hot street 340/360 cam.

He's never had it to the track but plans on doing so this summer. It used to be my car so I know it pretty well and my seat-o pants meter would guess it runs high/mid 13's. I agree that a 509 would be the wrong cam for this car. If he were to go up a notch or two what would be a good cam to go with the LD340 intake?

""a mild stall wich power brakes to around 2400.""

Have you thought about a performance converter with the cam/intake swap?

Call Tim @bullet cams and have him use H10 lobes on a 108-110 lsa. I use it on customers cars that want strong street 340-360's that pull from 2500-6500 rpm with mild valve springs(NO STOCK SPRING),120lbs seat-275-300lbs open. I've replaced a few .509 MP cams with this and the results are fantastic. The crosswind intake has worked well and I doubt the ld430 would be an improvement, but testing is the only way to be sure.

I have one of those .508 cams with maybe 100 miles on it, if interested PM me. A mechanic at local dealer had it in his Dart and decided it was too much for a daily driver.

cam, I'd used hughes #1110 springs and a lunati voodoo 60403.

intake, I'd probably go to the LD

converter, I'd go to something in the 2500RPM stall range.

Before tearing into the engine, call a reputable torque converter company and see what they recommend for the combo.

i have a 72 demon 340. when i bought it it had a single plane with a 750 double pumper and a mp508 with a 3000 stall and 391 gears. it ran strong but lacked any power below 4000. i put a crosswind airgap and a 670 quickfuel tech carb on it. it really helped the bottom end. i didnt notice any loss of power on top since i shift at 6600.

The 509 is good with 4.56 gears and a stick period. Get a copy of the 68 340 stick cam and with a LD340, holley dbl pumper,4.10s that car will be in the 12s

that LD340 is a great intake...and a good converter is worth its weight in gold.

What cam would you suggest with a 6-pak, auto with 3500 stall and 3.91 rear?

Comp XE 268 Hydraulic - excellent street cam...swapped out an old street hemi grind for this cam in a 3.55 stick e-body with a 6 pak, car picked up a lot of driveability and bottom end power.

You are already on the right path! Tweak the ignition a bit more and "optimize" your present setup,
BEFORE you start making other changes. It may surprise you for the better!! The bigger '508 cam and single plane WILL need the higher stall converter and gears to increase performance BUT it will reduce the "streetability" of the combo. Depends on how fast vs how far (in cruising) he wants to go!!
