Daughter bought a 1996 neon, cant get the brake lights to work. We have 12 volts to the brake light switch, so i figure the switch was bad, so we bought a new switch and still no brake lights. bulbs are good, and we have tail lights, just no brake lights, any ideas guys?

The power goes from the pedal switch to the turn signal switch and then to the rear. Just for fun make sure the emergency flasher switch isn't on but not flashing. Also you say you have power to the switch but you didn't say you had power coming out.

a 1996 neon,

On this car do the turn signals/brake lights/e flashers all use the same large filaments in the rear bulbs like the old stuff does? If so do any of the other (2) functions work? if so that says from the kick panel rearward you are good and the prob is most likely in the TS sw in the column or the flashers & their supporting wiring. Split the connector at the st col & find the brake light IN wire and the 2 OUT wires to the 2 respective brake lights dr and pass & ohm it & want continuity w the TS stalk in neutral/flashers off. I have no knowledge of the newer stuff & the above is based on 60/70's standard wiring but thought it might help

I have had to replace the turn signal switch assembly in the column. I do not remember what year of Neon I worked on though. Does it have a third brake light and does it work? If it does its more than likely the turn signal switch.
