Don't. it's a fire hazard. even if left wired up completely stock, it's a fire hazard. if your electrical system gets discharged, or you're running everything on the car at once, you could have up to 65 amps running through that wire, through the firewall, to the dash, through the old and crusty gauge...I wouldn't do it.

If you're adding a kill switch, you're obviously not too concerned with stock appearance, you could either leave the amp gauge in there to keep all the stock gauges together, or you could try to swap in a voltmeter in place of it.
