I had the braces on my 360/727, but when I changed to an A-833 4-speed, the braces no longer bolted up.
There are definitely two bolts which bolt through the block ears into the bellhousing, as mentioned above- one above the starter and the other behind the oil filter.

I never had to take the oil filter off to do that.
Never had to take a filter off to take the transmission out on a small block? Can't be done. There is one bolt behind the small block oil filter that threads into the bell housing and the filter has to come off to get this bolt out. As for the braces they won't fit with any of the engines with headers that I have seen. Never seen anybody have a problem by not having them either.
i have tti headers and th 90 degree filter. i can get that bolt out without taking the filter off,but it would be a pita and i don't even try.

west answered that. It can be done if it has one of those adapters. I forgot about that.

The braces on my 340 were missing. I picked up a pair off a 318 B body in the junk yard, same parts.
However, when I went to swap the old 318 braces off my '68 B'cuda and swap them to the '74 360 going in, only one side bolted in, the other side was different (don't remember which side didn't work on the 360).

Maybe it was a later block? According to this rebuilder's site, 360s got a bigger starter around 1981 so they moved the bolt hole for the brace forward one inch so that the brace would clear.
Quote:
1981-’84 CAR AND TRUCK This block was identical to the earlier one except that the hole for the brace on the left side was moved forward one inch (to 10") so that it would clear the bigger starter motor. Most of these blocks had a boss with room for both holes, but they were not always drilled.

I can tell you from personal experience with my van, which had a 318 (unknown year), '77 360 block, then '71 360 block, that the 77 block also had the bolt hole on the driver's side shifted forward about an inch, I just made a spacer for the tranny bolt and used a longer bolt (welded up a bunch of washers). Worked great, but when the new 360 went in, it was an early casting block (got 71 vintage for the thicker cylinder walls) and no longer needed the spacer. My mini-start "just" touches the driver's side brace, so when I'm doing my starter I have the brace bolts loose slightly until the starter is tight. Working great so far . My braces are also from my 318, if that makes any difference. Hope that helps!
