So, i've got a new Melling high volume pump for my 1972 400" 2 bbl motor, in a '72 satellite. Oil pressure looks a little low per factory gage, so am changing it for cheap insurance.

Have removed the filter and 4 bolts, and pulled back on the pump, but it doesn't want to budge? It spins about 45 degrees either way.
Do I just need to pry it outward from the block? I see they have an o-ring fitting, maybe its just resistance from this ?
I don't want to bend the intermediate shaft [?] by prying if i shouldn't.
Thanks.

I'm wondering if the inter shaft has to come out 1st. If not I'd gently pry w 2 screwdrivers opposite of each other & see if you can get it started coming out. Try em & play it by ear & see how it goes and there's alot of gasket surface area so a gouge is not going to cause a leak & if you do kick up a burr smooth it down. Yes you want to be professional & not ham fisted so START EASY & see what happens

Thanks gentlemen, i'll try those ideas. I was thinking also if maybe i should pull the distributor to get to the intermediate shaft - at least thats how i remember it working on a small block...
maybe just 40 years of gunk between the allen key drive and the original pump female hex ?.

No that's not it , try to find a spot on the pump body you can pry against , don't try to go between the pump and the block gasket surface though, it will come out .

I had trouble getting mine out of my 440 last month. It was like the pump was welded to the block. everyone said to tap with a hammer on the side of the pump body and it would come out "no problem". I rolled my eyes went into the garage and tapped it solidly a couple of times on the side of the pump body with a steel hammer and it literally fell out just as everyone said it would......

If the clearances in the motor are on the loose side, the oil pressure will be low with the stock relief spring. Why not try shimming the spring or replace it with the Hemi spring before you go through all the trouble of removing the pump?

Good suggestion!

Roger that ... but it is probably TOOOO late ... the pump-to-block gasket is more-than-likely ripped.

B U T ...to add ...I have pulled-apart more than my share of B engines ....and I have NEVER seen a pump that was not usable in a "normal" car.
