The 1-17 casting date is in the possible range for an A12 car. The only way to determine if it originally came out of an A12 car is to match the VIN# on the block to a known car.

It depends on your philosophy regarding replacement motors. Sure, any 440 can be used as a replacement motor once the original is gone because, according to some, once the original is gone it doesn't matter what goes back in the car. Non original is still non original regardless of the date on the block.

The VIN is from a car built in early February so if you are the type of person that has to have a date coded motor from exactly the range of A12 cars, then no. The VIN makes this one too early for even the first A12 cars let alone the ones built in July.

If you want to rationalize the block casting date and pretend the block was set aside for another 8 weeks to five months before it COULD have gone into an A12 car, then sure....this one would be fine.

The earliest "real" A12 blocks I have seen were cast in mid Feb 1969

My block is not an HP2

I believe it has the thick horizontal rib above the freeze plugs. If so, it would be an acceptable replacement block for an A12. First, because it's the correct configuration. It's also an E440 HP. For a restoration with a non-numbers matching block, you want all other date codes that preceed the scheduled production date but the earlier 69 blocks don't have the stiffener rib on the side of the block. IMO, if it's not the original block with the matching VIN, then having a closer date coded block to the SPD does not make it better than any other block with the correct year and configuration as long as it is not a latter date code than the SPD. In the case of an A12, I would say no later than the latest other date code on the car...which may be the K frame date code. That's just one opinion. I'm sure there will be others!

It's worth as much as any other 69 HP block in the same condition, no more.

The HP was rated at 375hp and a non HP at 350hp. The blocks are the same. I think the main difference was just the cam, carb and exhaust manifolds. The A12 motor had a few special tweaks but basically the same as a regular 440 hp.

Thanks for the answers on the hp thing. I was thinking there was no difference but didn't know for sure.
Does anyone know what the usual dates for a block for a 426 dated car would be?

Let me expand on what John is saying.
All 1969 440 blocks were the same . If the block was assembled with High Performance parts inside, it got the HP stamping. If it was assembled with standard performance parts, no stamping was on it.

There are no usual dates for a 4/26 car since they were made with that date all the way to mid July, you date the car by the parts dates on the car and by a corresponding non A12 LR car with a VIN close to your car. You can only approximate the real build date of the car and extrapolate the motor dates.
