Lost in the 70's
I'm trying piece together a rally dash setup for my Cuda and was wanting to see if someone here could tell me what parts will interchange. Here's what I have:

72-74 rally housing with speedo, 7k tach, clock and gauges.
Lens for the above housing (needs some polishing)
3 Switch housing with switches (don't know if it's from a rally or standard dash)
Wiring harness from standard dash
Heater switch panel from standard dash

Here's what else I know I'm missing:
Woodgrain bezels and housing
light bar

Questions:
Will any of the standard dash stuff interchange for the rally setup?
Will any of the 70-71 pieces interchange with 72-74 if I run across them?
Any advice on a economical source for some of these parts?

Thanks for any advice or info on this stuff!

1st there are no "economical" sources for E body rallye dashes, they are the most expensive,....BEAParts has quite a few repro pcs, including the bezels, woodgrain, lenses, and side clusters

about the only piece that will swap over from the standard dash is the radio bezel, you could use the lite bar in a pinch, but they are different, a standard harness can be used, but you'll need to alter some of the connector ends, and supply power/feeds for the tach, and clock,...I'm sure your aware of the differences between the 70-1 and 72-4 tach/clock panels/gauge reset knobs and their locations,....you didn't specify the year car or year dash you desire to build?

Repro gauges and tachs for the ralley dash are available, as are rebuilt originals ($$$$$$$$$)

It's a 71 but came with the 72-74 cluster. Not really too concerned with everything being OE correct since it will be more of a resto-mod but do prefer the rally look. So it will be a combination of original and repro parts preferably without spending the $3K on it that I see advertised for restored assemblies.

One more question out of curiosity. Does 70-71 use the same cluster housing as 72-74 or is that unique to each of those years as well?

Thanks for the help.

I'm assuming you mean the main cluster? holding the speedo/tach/fuel/etc,....If your thinking about switching speedo/clock of the 70-1 vintage into the 72-4 rear main cluster you can do it, just need all the parts to perform the swap

The wiring harness is different between rallye and standard and the tach wire routing is different between 70-72 and 73-74 rallyes. You can get a Year One harness for 200 or you can convert a standard harness to rallye with this:

http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/index.php/Dash-Worx_E_body_conversion_harness
(Have not used this particular item but I have dealt with them on technical issues and had great luck.)
The tach wire in 73 and 74 went through a grommet in the firewall while in the early E bodies it went it through the bulkhead connector.

The die cast housing is the same for all years. There may be a different part number on later ones, but everything is interchangeable.

As for wiring, early Challengers also used a separate wire for the tach.

Yes, I just noticed that website last night. It appeared to have some good info as well as the parts you describe. I think I'll try their conversion kit on my harness and might try their tach if I find mine is toast. Guess I better get to testing my components out and see what works and what doesn't. I'm also thinking I'll just buy the repro plastic housing and woodgrain since I'm missing them altogether. Hopefully I can piece it all together for around $1K or maybe a little more.
