I am installing a new timing chain set on my 92 magnum. when i took cover off, it did not have tensioner, but the new timing kit does? now i tried to install the tensioner, but it is too tight of a fit.

the original setup reminded my of my old 318 with the tab to drip oil and one open hole to let oil in.

without the new tensioner, the chain is very sloppy, just like the worn out old one that i took out...

any thoughts?
thanks

The tensioner should have had a pin holding it back for install. Pull the pin after you've got it on and it'll produce tension.

i cannot even install the chain with pin in....the motor did not have the tensioner, but the chain came with one. motor only had thrust plate and oil drip tang.

do they make different timing chains for the two setups??

That I don't know.

I remember ordering my tensioner for my 92 Magnum V6 from Moparts Connection years ago. It does replace the thrust plate, but doesn't come with it's own unique chain.

I just did one on a 69 340 block. It wouldnt go on unless you pulled back on the tensioner more than just the pin does. It was a tight fit. Took a second hand. IIRC, used a drift in the pin hole and pulled back on it. My Rollmaster chain was pretty darn tight even without it.

The tensioner changed the cam timing by one degree.

Without tensioner:

With tensioner:

folloow up....okay a little work and its on...

BUT, how does the oil get to the chain???

the fourth hole is covered by the plate.

I almost think i remember a bolt that had a hole in it on some old school motors??? my three bolts are solid..

thoughts?

Drill a ~5/16" hole in the rough dimple on the left side in Whalens' pic above and get a new oil gallery mini plug & drill a 1/64" hole in it & install it to to get a pressurized stream onto to the eccentric & chain. Drill a hole in the old one & use a screw to pull it out/then remove the filings. A bit of grease on the bit will keep alot of the shavings sticking to it
