typically speaking in a 440 with 2295s how much are the valve pockets good too? my slugs are about 070 in the hole and i want to run a 600 net lift cam. if i need more clearance how and i going to get it?

Installed the crankshaft, camshaft, timing gears and chain, number one piston and rod, put a set of light checking springs on the head on number one cylinder, put the solid or roller lifters, whichever one your using, in and a set of pushrods and the rocker assembly on the heads, set the lash and check with a dial indictor off of the spring retainers to see how much valve to piston clearances you have. Not knowing the duration, lobe center of the cam, where the cam is installed at on the intake lobe centers, the rocker arm ratio and so on limit our abiltity to make a SWAG All kidding aside it is always best to check these things very carefully so you know what you have as far as the cam lobe centers and the piston to valve seals, piston to valves clearnaces, both the intake and exhaust valves and so on If you can't do this yourself see if someone who lives close to you can help you on this I have seen Mopar Purple shaft 284 degree street hemi grinds not fit in a motor like your talking about and a big solid roller race cam fit very well You have to check them to be sure Now, get to work Let us know what you find

Hello,

I was in the same position a while back with an assembled motor in the car. I removed the heads and sealed off one hole at a time. Greased the cylinder walls, piston top and especially the clearance around the edge of the piston. Load it up real good. Then went to town with a grinder to the eyebrows. When done wipe the grease off in layers until you get down to the metals. Do a super cleaning and move to the next hole bringing that piston up and sealing off everything. Was not too bad. In a few hours I had the clearance needed and hardly spent any of my college beer money.

I have the same pistons(.030) and a Lunati .600 lift solid camshaft. They sit about .020 down in the bores(undecked) and I have more than .125 clearance using (.041?)Felpro head gaskets. It's been a few years since I built this motor and I have the clearances on a notebook(somewhere).

I thought about going to a bigger cam but decided instead to go that route on the new motor.

im at a cross roads here because i can go with my current uncut 452s and a roller cam or eddys and a flat tappet cam. i want as much lift as i can run with ethier choice. i know it needs to be checked as described here, i was curious about the grease'em and die grinding or is there a valve cutting tool i can put in my heads with a drill?

I would follow Cab's advice but first you need to get your heads....make sure the retainers don't bottom out at max lift and be sure the inner seat isn't a problem and cut the guides for the seals.
You can buy the tools needed but if you haven't done heads(or pistons) before it's best leaving it to a shop.

The eddy's and the roller sound good to me.

....from what I recall, a .700 lift cam comes very close to fitting in my motor without cutting the pistons.

the eddys AND the roller sound good to me too! but not mama's purse strings..lol!! if i keep the iron heads they need all the fixin's done to em.. retainer clearance etc.. so i guess i have to do all that before can i even check the P/V!
