Can you simply swap out a B-body pistol grip shifter handle originally installed in a 70 B-body bucket seat car, with the console version?
Do you have to change out the "box" mechanisms too?
If so, how involved is it?

I like the look of the console shifter better but wondering how involved the change is.

Thanks

Joe,

Are you trying to swap out a non-console handle with the console "bent" style without using a console? If so, it will work just fine with the same mechanism as there is no difference, but, it will look odd in my opinion...

BTW- it is really easy to pull the handle out assuming it still has the original slip in style handle. You just need a .010 feeler gauge and jamb it in to release the handle while pulling upward.

A simple swap but without the console to cover it you're going to have that ugly, unplated bracket in plain view.

Thanks for the reply James. Thought it would fit, wasn't sure.

Regarding the unplated bracket, not sure what you mean.

I've seen a couple of pictures of console pistol grips without the console and didn't notice anything unusual. Maybe it wasn't a console pistol grip, perhaps some other year pistol grip

Will have to find the pics now...

I just like the angles better than the "airplane yoke" style of the non-console type.

Here's what's avaliable,..the console 70 B is on the bottom of the pic,....will look "odd" without the console though

Thanks for posting Mike.
Hmmm, going to have to find that picture now.
After looking at the console shifter, it would look odd without the console.
The one I saw had sharp angles, not the "arc" the typical handle has...

Ok, so does this car have the wrong shifter in this console?
It doesnt appear to be the same as the console shifter pictured above:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/70-PLYMOU...=item4cf50caf75

It doesn't seem to have the acute angles the console shifter has, but it doesn't as long and arching as the non-console bucket shift version.
Yes, I know there is a lot "wrong" with that car, but focusing on what type of shifter he's got installed.

Joe- that is the correct console shifter in that RR. The sharp bend is hidden under the console, so all you see is that one angle you like

That RR has a 70 style pistol grip console shifter handle with the wrong shifter boot for a console car if you look close it even looks torn or ripped .
To answer the op's questions the 70 pistol grip was a one year only option i think , but the verion with the console is more rare .
you have to have the correct mechinizim and rods and levers so that when shifting into third gear your hand would not hit the dash .
I have done the conversion to my 69 charger because i liked the console look with the pistol grip . this was a very expensive conversion going fron a auto on the column car but it looks sweet when done .
If i had to due it over because you have to weld the floor hump any ways and the cost of parts i would try and do a 71 and up stlye to get the shorter throw and cheeper 71 and up console , just need to change the tail shaft on the trans to fit the 71 and up style .

Here's what the console shifter looks like when installed with the console, this is my 70 Daytona with a pistol grip shifted Keisler 5 spd

Monc/Joe,....at first I wasn't too sure what you wanted to do?.....but let's see, you want the look of the console shifter rather than the bench style, but without a console, just a boot on the floor like the bench model?...CorrecT?

If so you can't use the FACTORY console shifter because of the serious jog/dog leg the shifter has at the base to relocate it into the center of the console,...so here's your answer to the problem, you can purchase a console shifter that won't have the jog/dog leg base, it will have a bolt-on flat base like the benchseat pistol grip, but the console shape you desire,...contact Keisler for their repro CONSOLE pistol grip shifter to fit the TKO,...the Tremec TKO shift tower is relocated when installed in the car, so Keisler had to repro a custom pistol grip console shifter to fit, it's constructed out of stainless, so no chrome to peel, and the factory bezels/grips fit,..plus Keiisler supplies those as well,...this is the shifter pictured above in my Daytona

The whole bangin' hand into dash when shifting to 3rd was one of my concerns, and wasn't sure it was true. I kept hearing yes / no , as seen in this post.

Mike, thanks for posting the pics, yes you are correct in what I am looking to do .

So a repro Tremec console pistol grip shifter will do the trick?
Would I have the issue of bangin' the dash into 3rd?
Or will it warrant having to change shifting rods etc... as replied above?

Joe the Tremec/Keisler stick IMHO is the only other thing out there for you to use that would require little to no mods to acheive your goal, as far as "shortening" the shifter rods, I think they mean the hole location on the arms, as the closer you are to the pivot point center of an arm, the shorter the throw, but more force is required,...if your using a factory/Hurst box, IMHO you'll be OK with the console shifter, as it is positioned more rearward/down towards you the driver than the "boat rowing" benchseat shifter,...I've driven quite a few FACTORY bench and console 70 Pistol grip shifted cars, they're all long stroke shifters because of the increased arm length of the shifter, the bench seat models are the knuckle/dash bashers,...but a sloppy console shifter box can get close too......hope this helps

Mike
