I was chasing a vibration over the past month and found a loose pinion nut. I socked it down and went for a test ride today. All of sudden bam, you could hear it grinding and making all kinds of bad sounds. I was able to limp it home with a nice stinky trail of gear oil coming out behind the yoke. What would fail on this center? I thought the 742 were pretty tough centers.

Probably ate up the pinion preload shims when it was loose, you tightened it up, loading the pinion bearings too much.

not sure how much the shim would have been eaten up but I'll lean toward more the bearings getting beat up pretty bad when the pionin stem lost it's preload . Time for a rebuild , hopefully you didn't screw up the gears , how long have you been chasing this vibration ?

not too long, maybe about a month. I only driven it twice since I noticed it. I'll drop it out and see what the gears look like. I gotta guy that will rebuild for 150. I'll have to supply the rebuild kit. I think they run about 100.

Doesn't sound like you will have messed up the gears, 742 kit is a little more expensive than the 489 kit. good luck ...

Well today I pulled the center and the gears look good. The pinion bearing is definetly shot. My question now is are the spider gears supposed turn when you spin the yoke or just when the axles are in?

When the axles are in, if it's a sure grip they won't turn unless you are driving it around a corner.

Yes it's a clutch type. While I'm at it should I have them change the clutches? It still grabbed nicely on the street.

Unknown, I bought it used in 09 and put about 4,000 miles on it since then.

Since it will be apart probably a good idea to at least open up and have a look.
