Dixie Restorations is now able to duplicate the anti-corrosion finish found on NOS and most assembly line CC alternator and starter housings. I'd like to hear input on how early y'all have seen this coating. I have originals that show evidence of the light brownish/gold tint back to '67. Does anyone have a NOS or survivor piece that would date back earlier than 1967? Have several customer orders in the shop and I would like to narrow down the years when this finish was first applied. Thanks for any and all help with this.

Can you show a picture of your coating? I have a couple of NOS round back dual field alternator halves if you need any pictures.

Snoopy - was hoping no one would notice, LOL! I haven't been able to master the picture/thread thing yet. You mind posting a picture so folks would be clear what I'm asking about? Many thanks my friend. Dial-up really sucks!

I will look for the parts. I thought I knew exactly where they where, but I guess my old-timers has struck again. I will post the pictures as soon as I can find the parts. Sorry

I have an original, unrestored 1964, alternator....somewhere. I will have to see when I get back to the USA (and back home).

I have an unrestored 64, it has the same subtle yellowish tint to the finish as the later ones I have. I am not convinced it was applied secondarily as some kind of preservative, it looks more like a result of the die casting process, possibly due to a mold release agent.

Thanks much to all who took time to post. Looks like another CC puzzle of some that received and some that didn't. I have a 70 cast dated rear that is completely coated light dirty yellow/gold except where the machining occurred. Scott, you may very well be correct but I'm leaning toward a corrosion inhibitor. If you'll look @ NOS examples, most of the associated hardware, including the capacitor stud/flat washer/nut all show the same light yellow finish. Apparently whatever it was didn't survive long when exposed to the outside elements. I see many customer teardowns with traces of yellow on the inside of the shells but no visible signs on the outside unprotected areas.
Just trying to narrow down when this coating first showed up. Thanks again to all you contributors!

..i have seen survivors solid rust which suggests natural but everybody seems to restore theirs to some form of black....

The spacers were zinc phosphate...which looks darker on that type of steel.

We just completed tear down and review of a really low mile 65 model year single pulley alternator. It's exterior finish looks very close to what "Fish" posted above but has a hint of the gold/yellow tint. The interior of both the front and rear casings shows a strong presence of the color. So it looks like some received the corrosion and/or mold release application at least back to 1965. Again, would like to get additional corroboration from interested members here.
Thanks!

You'll also see that the machined surfaces do not have the yellow, my observation is that whatever it is made it onto the raw die cast parts before they were assembled.
