Ok all you carburetor gurus time to advise my ignorance; I have a purchased motor in my challenger that the owner claimed had a carb that was not suitable. He gave me another that he had bought to put on it.

The motor: 318CID, .030 over, 9.5:1 comp, purple cam with 284/284 duration and .484/.484 lift. (and a drilled through Eddlebrock performer manf. if it makes any difference)

The original carb: A Holley double pumper ( List # 4777-5). From what i have gathered its a 650 cfm with mech. secondary.

New carb: Carter AFB Comp. series (9636). Again from what i have gathered this is a 625 cfm with vacuum secondary and designed for mopars.

So my question is should I make the swap and why? The difference in the secondarys seems to me the biggest reason to make the swap because the motor is backed with a 904.

This type post usually starts a fight, so I'll begin. Either carb will work if set up correctly, period. Personally I like the Carter since its easily tunable with metering rods and springs, but that is just my

Id be more concerned about the 284/484 cam, and the rest of the combo. But id go with the AFB

904 go with the carter, jet it and forget it. 833... go with the DP as you have more control over the RPM's with a stick.

How about a Holley vacuum secondary? Best of both worlds.

(1) my concern too (2) X2 on the AFB or eddy 1406 or holley 1850 (vac sec) (assuming you dont have the AFB in hand yet but are strongly considering it)

ditto. I'd think the DP would work fine. If you have tuning issues it's more likely the 484 cam. They like compression, stall and gear. If you are trying to tune a 9:1 318 w/ a stock stall and 3.23 gears you'd be miles ahead swaping the cam out.
