Does this look normal to you? I'm thinking not.

looks like the counter balance has been hitting the pick up! Your not the first if it is!

+1 Cut open you filter and look for an metal particles. Better yet, pull off some rod caps and look for abnormal bearing wear.

Looks like you did a little clearancing on start-up? I would be more worried about where the shavings went, unless this happened not on first start but when the crank or the main caps let go? If that was the case then I would expect to see more damage?

Why not take it apart and put it back together after a little light grinding and heavy cleaning? Make sure there are no cracks from the point of impact.

Unless maybe there is more metal missing than it looks like?

I'm no pro engine builder, but I've blown up plenty of junk!

Good luck

Make sure the pickup tube isn't worn dangerously thin in that spot.
I wouldn't worry about the crank at all. And obviously move the pickup down a bit.

I don't know , if that is a FORGED crank , which it looks like , then that would be normal look of the way the counterweights are ground to size , not all counterweights are the exact same shape and machining marks will not be the same . If that was ground down by hitting the pickup tube I would think the tube would have a hole in it by now given the amount of area that is flattened .

Quick check to see if you had a lot of metal go thru the motor is to open up the oil pump , if it was sucking metal you would sure know it by looking at the coverplate .....

Yeah, I'm gonna check the pump. The weight was not hitting the pickup. The edges look squared off to me thinking it is a cast crank. I'm not sure.

What size engine is that ? If it's not hitting the pickup then that is a FORGED crank and that's what they look like .

70 stamped date meaning a 70 ASSEMBLY date ?

What balancer does it have on it ?

Do you have a vibration problem you are chasing ?

Yes assembly date.
Has an aftermarket balancer. No weights
Had a vibration, but found a real loose pinion nut. Which pretty much happened all of a sudden. Which is why I did not think it was engine related.

It looks like a normal steel crank.

I found that the counter balance was just barely hitting the baffle in the oil pan. No shavings in the pump and filter. I'm thinking someone used the thinner oil pan gasket and that's what caused the touching. I picked up the thicker one.
