OE rear axle from a 66 barracuda. Would this be a clutch sure grip? Rebuildable? Same SG unit as an 8&3/4?. Thank you for your time.

The 7 1/4" sure grip diffs were clutch type, though I don't know if anyone is making new ones. The clutch units are rebuildable but are totally different from any other axle.

I looked on Randy's site & no clutch plate kits avail. Got my eye on one and it may be good as is & will be going into an easy driven (wintertime) daily driver 65 dart just to get around in the snow

Yes it can be a sure grip. But a 7 1/4 won`t last long. It was mostly a slant six rear and some 318 2bl cars. 2404427 is the repair kit number for 66. I think the kit is 6 plates and 4 discs.

this would go into a minimum throttle daily driver 318 for the winter snows. Havent went & checked it out yet but spoke to the owner & he let it slip that he has done a few burnouts w it w the 273 so he knew it was a sure grip. (He just swapped in a 360/4 sp/8&3/4)

When the 7.25 open rear breaks, usually it's the spider gears. A Sure Grip helps to spread the load and allows the spiders to live with a hot slant six or mildly modified 318.

Both the clutch and cone 7.25 SGs were produced, both are hard to come across.

I've seen people post that Randy's has new SG units, but he doesn't, he only has the R&P sets.

He wants a buck and a quarter for it & he had just put new brakes on it w out of the blue the 360/4 sp deal fell in his lap so he swapped it & added a cutdown B body 8&3/4. iirc Randy has new spiders. the plate part # that mopars4ever posted , "joesixpack" on here might have one on his kitchen table. If it's out there he HAS one 4 sale

Honestly for a buck and a quarter I would look at other options. Especially if you have to do any work to it but that`s your call. When I worked at the dealer back in the day the 7 1/4`s didn`t seem to last very long. Yes, the open rear spiders were a problem but the rear itself is tiny compared to the others.
