I was thinking it wont hold the piston square in the bore since most of the pressure is directed to one side.

The stock retainer for the rear servo is very thin, and often gets bent. The kit from mrrandy comes with a much thicker, stronger, retainer.

IMO, I would use the new spring; especially if that is the one from mrrandy. It should be, and apprears from your picture, to be stiffer than the stock one. That should help the band release during the 1-2 shift (low band apply valve bodies).

As far as the trans shop taking the shims out of the servo, that stock configuration will cushion the servo/band apply. And since the stock valve body makes real high pressure going into reverse, and the rear servo gets engaged in reverse, they might be trying to ease that application. This is why it is important to go all the way to idle when putting a torqueflite in reverse. However, in a race application, shimming it solid will improve the servo release during the 1-2 shift.

Alright I guess I was just over analyzing things my bad. All I wanted to do was change the fluid now look what I got into .
The springs feel close in tension just one spring is made longer for tension and the other is thicker.

the shorter spring is a much higher rate, most likely.

The stock spring has an installed pressure of 15 pounds, with 1/2" of piston travel the pressure increases to 33 pounds.

The stiffer spring has an installed pressure of 37 pounds and increases to 77 pounds with 1/2" of travel.

rear servo is all done and went onto the frt. The band strut was modified and upon closer inspection its starting to bend . Glad I this trans was all went through/rebuilt with manual VB cant shops get anything right.
