What engine temp do you guys use just before you leave and what is the temp rise @ the stripe? Also how long does it take to shed the temp after the return lane?

I leave at 180 and at the stripe its 180, but your probably talking about a car that is running gasoline in it,which i am not.

Our last deal was a hot blooded BBF......staged at 160 - 165 and parked it around 195-200.
I used a tick tock switch ( Shogun industries ) ....a sequential switch that alternated the water pump and fan and it would recover in a very short time..........five minutes max.
This really helped in late rounds when there wasn't a lot of time between passes.
I know new cars run a lot hotter , but I never liked seeing over 200 personally.
And a lot of cars just didn't have much trouble with it.
I know bow tie guys who could run all day and never get over 180 with pretty decent cars........mid 10 stuff.
My Ford just didn't care for it and I did a bunch of things to try and improve it.
A shroud would have really helped too if I would have kept the belt driven fan.
Big aluminum radiator , Moroso electric w.p. drive , 1,600 c.f.m. fan and the tick tock kept it manageable , but it wasn't exactly optimum.
A little hard on the battery , so I had to make sure to charge it when I had time so it would start me in the late rounds.

Back when I was running gas I had a pretty good thing going.

I would burn out @ 180. Leave @ 190, cross the line @ 200, and @ the turn off I was @ 190, and back to 180 by the time I reached the pit.

I have a very large radiator

We have been staging between 130 - 140 running 200ft in the mud crossing the line @ 180 - 190 hitting 200 on the return then shuttin down 200-210, It takes around 4 min to cool off to 100-120 with the engine off and the pump & fan on, We see a 40 to 50 degree temp rise in around 3.5 secs @ wot, I have a single pass rad with a 2800 cfm fan with no fan shroud, Don't have too much room in between the moroso electric pump and the single pass rad around 1/4", The fan is mounted in front of the rad pulling air out of the front of the truck to help clear the rad fins,so I dont run the fan during the pass, I switch it on @ the turn on to the return road, We have been gettin along with this set up for 4 seasons without overheating....But we have plans to run out of state in @ a 300ft track... so its time to up grade,Current rules state cant fool with the fire wall so I can only go forward, Trying to keep the stock grill in place so any one got any ideas

I like to see 140 F in the burn out, stage at or below 160 F, cross the line(1/4 mile temps) at or near 180 to 200 F , different motors at different times of the year make a difference As far as cool down time it depends on which car and which track More power makes more heat, takes a little longer to cool down, all comments are about gasoline motors N/A, no power adders and no fill in the blocks either

Spring And Fall click the fan on at 170 stripe at 185-190 stopping cool down at 130 to keep some heat in but in summer fan on at 150 stripe at 175-180 cool as much as possible for the temp and humidity

when i click the fan can sit under 2000 rpm and never see the temp rise even 3 numbers

If I run with a lite load with the fan on its hard to hit 150 even in summer,

Everything I have heard says yes , so that is my current build.
I won't know for sure till late spring or so , but I hope they are right.

With my roadster & 565, the temps were identical to yours

YES big difference, I have to warm the engine proir to going to the lanes to get heat in it. I heat it up to 160 and then turn the fans on it stays at 160 ! I have tried 140 and 180 but it runs the best at 160.It will go higher without fans but it will stay at the number if the fans are kept on. This is with outside temp in mid 80's we will see this summer when the temps go to high 90's.I used to leave the fans on for about 5 minutes to cool it down after a run and now I turn the fans off so it wont cool down. Best thing no pushing in the lanes just start it and drive it even if you have to sit for 20 minutes at idle. I love it!

Burnout at 150 or so, launch at 160 ... might hit
180 at the turn off and its back to 150-160 at the pit
using E85... I see a 20* drop just using E85... its
a little harder to get it up to temp so I watch it
pretty close in the lanes and fire up to keep it near
temp

Why don't you put a larger radiator in the bed. I have done this on a few hill-n-hole trucks here around the house.

One day I will have something cool here.

The E85 is in the race car, my Rampage I can get a
18" X 24" in fairly easy in the fascia area... this
car/truck is going to run pump gas
EDIT
I forgot he(OP) is dealing with a truck.... sorry

Super stock rules, rad in stock location, If I have to I can run a second rad in the bed but I am not @ that point yet. When I ran in the mod class I had a larger rad in the bed, no rad up front, it worked good.

Yep, its a truck, the rad is alum with side tanks that sit on the frame rails, the rad cap just clears the hood, Notice the Mopar six pack scoop turned backwards,

What kind of pump is it? You think your just not moving enough water or could it be pumping water to fast?

Its a Morroso, the kind that replaces the factory pump, I don't run a thermostat so the water has no restriction, On a factory pump with a belt the pump volume is progressive with rpm, the electric pumps the same speed all the time, my heating problem is only the short blast @ wot, 50 degree rise fast, so my thought was not to slow down the flow?

If the water is moving too fast it can't absorb any heat, and could cause your problem. If the water is moving too slow/ not circulating well it can overheat the water in the heads and block, and cause your problem. Just brain storming.

when trying to just make a run,, stage at about 120 and it gets to 140-150 at the end of the run

trying to go fast,, westcott does this too,, stage at about 60-70,, end of run 90-100

I enter the water at 160, launch about 170, end of run 180, and it starts cooling as soon as I hit the return road. On alky of course!
Leave fan and pump on for approx. 5 mins back in pit back under 160

When I ran gas you could add 20* to those #'s and 10-15mins extra cooling. And that was while being towed up and back for 1/4mile run

I usually try to do my burnout at about 160 but if its a hot day and I have to sit in the lanes for a hour or two starting it and shutting it off 10 times it might be at 180 maybe hit 190 on the run back down to 170-180 by the time I get back to the pits. Never seems to go over 180 idleing. This is about the norm isnt it?

My temp gauge starts @ 100 and we heat soak the engine for alum rods, seems I can get the oil hot then back down the water temp with the water pump and fan back to 100 pretty quick but it tends to leave kinda rough with the water temp that low, I have tried to leave @ 120 and it works, just not as good as 140, this is all @ 200ft track, I am thinking the 300ft deal is gonna push it over the boiling point under load, I am kinda weak on this subject cause all my experience is with marine diesels using heat exchangers, We have the whole ocean to remove heat, this fan and air flow thing is kinda tough to figure, my first instinct is bigger is better but space is a factor, I have been using 200 degrees as a safe limit for water temp, I don't know what the real safe limit for a race engine is? I have seen 230 a few times but not under load, long return lane with traffic & started to push water out the cap, I have been following most of the E85 posts and have been fence sitting for a year cause of the high humidity here on the coast and the water problems I have had with E10 in all the small engine stuff we have on the farm, seems I cant let anything sit for a week with E10 before it picks up water in the fuel, I am leaning toward fitting a 2 pass rad, any thought on this cause it will take a fair amount of fab work and i will have to lose the grill.

Enter the water at 180 to 185, water pump only, 195/200 at the turn off or less.

you alky guys are killing me, whats the secret on keeping the water out of the fuel? Man living near sea level has its bad points too, The NC coast is a giant sand bar with pine trees, When its not raining the humidity level is 65%+, Its wet out every morning.... so some of you fellas on the coast must have this figured out

The "secret" isn't too big. Just get the motor temp up over 200 to 210 before shuting it off. If its' real milky, you might have to push that a bit.
If you have leaned it out going too and from the line and during warm up, the heat in the motor can take care of any moisture or alky present.
