What do you guys recomend for for notching tubes.

I know what I'ld like to have but no way I can afford it.

SO I'ld like to hear what you have/have used, and your thoughts about them. Also, if you bought one did you have to tweak it to make it work properly. (or better).

Give me the good, bad, or the ugly.

i bought one of those ones you always see in the multiple classifieds inside the back cover of a magazine. apart from having to make a strong plate to mount it on so i could fit it to a vice i've done nothing to it & it works real well. it needs a strong powerful torquey drill to get the best results but my Hitachi drill works well with it. remember, check twice, cut once.

I have one from Harbor Freight. Works OK. I have mine mounted to a drill press. Would like a better one, but will wait until this one wears out.

I have one of the Williams Lowbuck Tools punch and die style. It's quick but not real nice notches. Buy yourself some cylindrical grinding wheels to do finish work. You know, the ones that look like a toilet paper roll.

I used a Joint Jigger with the bi metal hole saw. If you only have to build one mild steel car, it will be ok. It does need to be mounted to something stable. I think I wore out/broke 3 or 4 hole saws. If you going to build cars all the time, or are going to do CM chassis, get some thing way better. I have seen pro chassis builders use a lathe and a mill with special fixtures and cutters. That gives them the real tight fit thats needed to TIG weld. Mig welding don't need the fitment so tight.

I use the Notch Master from JD Squared.
Mount on bench or in drill press. Nice tool!

Are the angle increments on the HF notcher accurate or should I use an angle transfer tool to get it right?

I will need it to be able to do both MS and CM but I wont be doing any full chassis'. Just adding bars here and there as needed to be legal both in my car and the Jrs.

I use a digital level to locate the angle,
and a digital protractor to cut the
angle. According to my digital protractor,
my NM is within 1/2 degree.

Bill I just bought this one... in the post its 69.99
but I got it at the swap meet last weekend for 59.99
it makes nice tight joints... I also have a older unit
that I need to replace the bearings in but didnt so I
got this for my CM chassis on the Rampage... I made about
10 cuts so far and its nice
http://www.woodwardfab.com/woodward_fab_pipe%20and%20tube%20fab%202.htm
But if you plan on any more I would go with the
$199. unit... very strong

That is the same unit that JD squared
sells. Very strong and cheaper in price.

I'm still thinking about ordering up the $199. unit
because I do alot of tubing work besides chassis's
but they didnt have that one at the show and I wanted
a notcher now

Raff, does the notcher you bought have the ability to use the smaller mandrel hole saws or just the larger style?

I don't plan on doing "alot" of notching otherwise I would be considering something like the synch180 so that one might be just right for me.

I could also jig it up in my drill press as it's the only thing I have with a 1/2" chuck.

I believe it just the large diameter arbor (1/2 X 20)
I have it mounted on my mill but use a 1/2" hand
drill motor
