The '346 heads have induction hardened exhaust seats, but since the hardenening process only is a few thousandths deep, after cutting during a valve job inserts are required to live with the unleaded gas.

As far as the induction hardening , it's deeper and wider than you'd think , had a set of 452's that got 1.81 exh and the material was hard out to that valve size , didn't need an insert .
