If I recall correctly, yes there is an "inner" seal that keeps the rear end fluid from contaminating the tapered roller bearings (axle bearings), and there is another seal on the other side of the roller bearing (think this is the one that needs to be pressed on with the bearing ??) . . . the inner bearing you would need a bearing puller to take out . . . the inner bearing is usually located just inside of the axle bearing, you should be able to see it . . . . . Best bet is to check with any service manual . . . Just my Cheers Mark

You don't need a puller to get the seal out. You can use the end of the axle to pop it out. Then you need to install the new seal. A few was to do it 1 a seal instal tool. a large pipe or socket matching the size of the seal. Good luck

To me, by design, the inner seal retains the gear oil for the rear differential. The outer seal is more of a dust seal for the greased axle bearings.
If the brakes are contaminated with gear oil the inner seal failed.
All 8&3/4 style rear axles have the same type of seals at the axle ends.

pack the back side of the seal with bearing greese to help hold the spring on the seal in place when driving it in drive it in to the shoulder stop for the seal wash and repack the wheel bearing,it does not get lubed by the gear oil in the diff the inner seal is right behind the wheel bearing and lock collor on the axle the outer seal is the thin embossed metal shim seal behind the backing plate the foam seal goes behind the bearing retainer and is to keep dirt out of the wheel bearing there are no seals inside by the chunk, but it has a gasket for the housing be sure to set the axle end play adjustment when it goes back together...the adjuster is on the pass side unless some one has moved it to driver side if you replace the stock tapper bearing,it has to be pressed/cut off and pressed on,be sure to not mess up the adjuster, they do not make those any more might as well crack the chunk loose and change the gear oil while its has axle out make sure to replace/clean gear oil off the brake shoes and drum with brake clean( I would replace the shoes if they are oil soaked myself) I run the non-adjustable green bearings with the o-ring on them and did not use the inner axle seals this time,no leaks so far greens can run with or with out the inner seals good luck

Do you have part numbers for these?

You'd see it right there in the recessed step(s) at the end of the housing if it was there. Strangely a PO my have omitted it for some reason. Get a made in US of A one and as Scratchn said pack the back side of it w grease to keep the delicate spring in place as you drive it in. Determine how deep it goes (to which step) (eyeball the axle bearing to help determine that distance) & put some gasket cement sparingly but evenly around the ID of that step cause if you put it on the seal OD itself alot will be rubbed off as the seal is driven down to its location. Get a round flat piece of metal (SLIGHTLY less OD than the seal OD) and a drift and a BFH and a HELPER to hold the circular metal and the seal in there and the drift centered on the circular metal & you man the hammer . But b 4 you even get started 1st trial fit the seal by hand at the OPENING of the final location/step as some are a bit too wide (OD) & taking the paint off helps (then clean it) keep from mangling it (some cheap ones tend to be like that). Get it started evenly/lightly/firmly into the housing w a few easy taps then drive it down to it's distance with as few whacks as possible (each stroke makes it more likely to distort). If the seal starts to go a bit sideways move the drift to the portruding side & even it up. Trust me a helper works wonders (3 hands are needed). Wrap the splined end of the axle w a piece of brown paper sack paper & stick the axle thru the seal until the splines are on the inside then pull the paper out & already have put some grease on the seal ID if the axle shaft is dry. I prefer the end play on the low side .008-010" or less. I'm w Eberg- tapered roller bearings LIKE preload

The best and cheapest seal installer Ive see is a piece of plastic pipe.Get a piece that almost as big as the seal and about a foot long.Line up the seal and tap in.Goes in straight and dosent deform the seal.Probally costs about a buck or two.Rocky

I don't have the numbers but don't worry about the outer seal that is in the retainer. It is more of a dust seal than a grease sea and is only replaced when the bearing is replaced as it requires the bearing being removed to replace it. The inner seal is the important one as it keeps the rear end lube out of the bearing which is lubricated by packing with a needle and good wheel bearing grease.
I was looking for PNs specifically for the two parts I quoted. When I put inner seals in my last 8 3/4 I wanted a set of the two parts listed there and the local stores looked at me like I had two heads. I guess I could do a little more digging on my own.

Michael is the A7-LK the threaded adjuster plate/seal assy? How much does it run? EDIT meant the A7-RK as it goes on the pass side.

I don't think you can buy the endplates anymore unless the aftermarket started making them again in the last year or 2 , you need to find good used ones or old MP kits to get them now .

Thank you double R. I need a threaded one & there's a pair of used ones (both sides) in the parts for sale sec for $25 to your doorstep, I should jump on em
Yes you should , that's a good price if they are not all bent up , but as long as the threaded adjuster is free you can straighten the rest .
