I know these are dinosaur units, but I have a couple that are dead and would rather look into having them fixed than just pitching 'em. Anyone ever hear of someone pulling them apart and repairing them?

Not sure what a 404B is, I was talking about the Prestolite Transignitor box. Same thing?

The MSD 404B and 404BC are not any where near the same thing as the Prestolite, way better than the Prestolite where in my opinion That is why the Prestolites where not used after the MSD 404 came out In fact Mopar made thier own Chrome box race ignition ECU with the blue heat sink capacitors to replace the Prestolites units before the MSD where made Use the Prestolite as a conversation piece and get yourself a MSD 7 series ignition if your racing and need a good race unit, if you need a good street and strip unit for a N/A pump gas type motor get yourself a MSD 6 box

Sure the MSD is much better, 45 years later, it certainly should be. Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but guys in the old days went much faster with crappier equipment than what I'm looking to do. Plus, the MSD won't plug in to the factory wiring harness like the black box will.

The first MSD gold race boxes, 404 series, came out in 1973 or 1974 I thought they where a bunch of smoke and mirrors, boy was I wrong I was racing a 1970 Hemi cuda stick shift car in NHRA A/S class, I had one of the Mopar race chrome boxes with the blue heat sink, I also had a Hayes (later became "Stinger) CDI box that ran well. I ended up trying a MSD 404B (universal box, worked with points, CDI or magnetic distributors) That switch made my car start easier, especially when cold and it made it run better in the summer in high gear MSD makes boxes that plug into the stock Mopar wiring harnesses I have several, 404C, 7C and now a non programable digital 7 MSD also makes a 6 sereis ECU box that will plug into the stock Mopar wiring harnesses The only down side to the race 404 and 7 sereis boxes is you need the matching coil to take full advantage of them

here is a picture of the MSD boxes made for Mopar to plug into the factory ignition harnesses, MSD7C on the left side(bigger box) and the 404BC on the right I have ran both in my car at the track and on a engine on the dyno compared to a MSD7AL2 and saw no gains or losses with either The 404B and 404BC boxes don't need the resitor spark plug wires like the MSD 7 sereis boxes do

I have one of the Prestolite boxes with a matching coil. They are more of a Petty blue than black. Working when I took them off a LONG time ago.

What you have is for a '68 Hemi Dart/Barracuda. They're wired differently so they won't interchange.
