More often than not I can not get sound from the system. If I turn the volume control to the max I can hear it playing but very faint. If I turn it off and wait a while and turn it back on it may play for a few minutes and at other times it may play fine all day.
Unsure if I have a problem with the head unit or the amp. Another thing I notice which may or may not be related is when adjusting the EQ the lights in the knobs will flicker sometimes. I knowit sounds like the head unit but just looking for input. Anybody have this problem and fixed it? Thanks

I have a 10 year old cd-cassette combo am-fm square face mopar radio that does the same flickering of eq lights, but still works great. The good thing is that the price of these factory stereos are coming down.

Since this is Infinity, I'm assuming high end Jeep. You may find that the memory for the power seats and power mirrors is inside the radio head unit. You'll need to keep that in mind when searching for a replacement radio to make sure you don't loose any function.

All of the Infinity stereos I have had do not use a single amp. Rather there is an amp mounted on the individual speaker frames. The likelihood that all of them quit at once is remote. The only thing in common is the power feed that comes off the back of the radio, blue wire I believe. I lean towards the main unit in the dash but troubleshooting by remote control is hard to do.

i too have a jeep with the infinity radio and found that all my speakers were playing extemely weak, sounded like someone talking thru a tin can with string attached, plus i had lost my cassette function, among other things. searched on ebay and found an nos infinity gold radio for $135 shipped. very easy to replace, as there are 2 separate harnesses, a ground and a 90* antenna lead. then i realized that all my speakers were going. called crutchfield and got their infinity speakers, they come with the adaptors for the 6 3/4" speakers that fit in the 7" hole and the adaptor harness to hook the factory speaker harness to the new speaker. all my speakers now work fine, radio is great and sound is excellent. thought i had the same trouble as you described, but i doubt there is an amp problem. the radios can be had for less $ on ebay, just depends on what you're willing to spend. my dave ss/ea #1355

All the speakers have been replaced with Infinity's. As for a seperate amp per speaker then what is that thing under the passenger rear seat? Isn't that the amp for all the speakers?

i'm not sure what it is, but even with the new radio i had the tin cup/string effect. so i wasn't sure what was wrong. then i cranked up the radio and heard that i was in fact getting power to the other speakers, i guess indicating the speakers were blown. called crutchfield and they confirmed itreplaced the speakers & bingo full sound everywhere. don't know if this helps you, you might bring it to a stereo/entertainment store and have them check it out. getting the door panels off is a pita but only takes about 10 mins. so if you have a known good speaker you might be able to troubleshoot that way. have you actually tried replacing the radio, alot easier then replacing the speakers. about 6 screws, radio knob off, trim comes off and 2 screws hold the radio in. dave ss/ea #1355

thanks,

I talked to a repair center nearby and I'm going to send them the head unit and amp for testing. The shipping is cheap enough and the charge is 35.00 for testing.

My '95 Dakota with Infinity had individual amps mounted directly on each speaker.

My '01 300M has a single whole system amp mounted in the trunk.

So Infinity systems have been made both ways over the years.

89 LeBaron, individual amps on each speaker
95 LeBaron, single amp in trunk (same with 94)

I have a spare single amp.
