I was looking up pistons online from different piston mfgs. and found that very few even gave a part# for the 440. JE had a some, Diamond had the second most, but Ross had a very good selection. I have a 514 ci with Ross pistons I haven't put togather yet. Happy New Year!!!!! I have JE in my 542ci. Well I did not look up 440 source.
Are you doing a 4.440 bore with a 4.15 stroke.... if so PM me I have some stuff you might like

Take a look at KB site, United Machine or silvolite, all the same They have started a new name line of forged pistons, ICON. They seem to be very good quality at a reasonable price, I used a set of them in a 470 C.I. 440 bracket motor, 3.91 stroke with a 4.380 bore, the motor made 720+ HP at 7000 RPM with 12.8 to 1 comp. ratio using VP C12 race gas The fit and finish was very good, ringlands where tight and the ring back spacing was right on, weights and deck hieghts(compression heights on the wrist pins) where dead nuts

I have a Callies 4.15 crank that weights have been turned down to move the weight in closer to the centerline and alum rods and CP pistons but my pistons are for a B1M/C head

We used Icon's in the 408.....nice pieces, reasonably priced

71 demon stock stroke 440/indy ez-1 running 10.10 @ 132.14 mph in the 1/4 and 6.36 @ 107.46 mph in the 1/8 not in the same weekend but It did it then I sold it. 67 Belvedere that worked it's way in the 10's

check the manufacturing date of the Ross pistons. if they're old, as in made in the 80's like a lot of the pistons 440 Source sold before they went to KB, check their expansion rate. boil each piston for a few minutes in water & check their growth. we had a set where 1 piston grew 0.004 more than the rest. unfortunately we didn't check this process till after we found we had a fault. it might seem silly to some, but i boil all my pistons & check them these days but so far only the early Ross piston has been a problem for me. i told a friend to check his TRW's & he found 2 that grew 0.0015 more than the rest, but thats no where as bad as the early Ross that i had.
i can remember my granfather who was a machinist boiling up pistons in the early 80's. he told me he bored each hole to suit the piston. i would suspect these days tolerances would a lot better with better metalurolgy(sp) but reading this brings back memories of the huge soup pot out the back of his shop on the gas burner. one of me mates bought a 440 source kit a few years back & your right, they were old stock pistons.

Yes, the older Ross' DID have different tolerances and thats not just based on the material only ( although , yes, its a major factor). Much of what changes piston clearances is also the machines and procedures that build them. There are WAY different skirt designs now that change the required piston to wall clearances.
Piston clearance is a factor of skirt profile, ovality, and barrel shape(template)
Even with the same material, a piston can be taylored for a pistons' size point to reflect a given expansion rate...for a given application, depending on size point and cylinder length.
For example, I am working on a SBC right now, 4.165 bore, high RPM, alcohol injected motor, and they are older Ross'. At 4.165, they REQUIRE .008 clearance due to their design and material.
