Anybody still use one? I have been looking for a carb for my street/strip car and have come across a few . just curious as to what would be expected from one.

I had one. saw no difference. If they were an edge everyone would have one and the would be popular.

buddy had one on his Chevelle, couldn't tell any difference performance wise from a 4 barrel. It was a big carb though, like 950 cfm......

don't see why it wouldn't work just as good as a 4bbl. The rear butterflies have just been coverter to one single flap. Just make sure it will work on your intake. That rear door night get hung up on a standard 4 hole or dual plane intake.

Try to get the mark II version with 1050 CFM. It had revised secondary metering to fix a lean tip in stumble on the smaller 950. Most of the early intakes were already notched to clear the butterfly.

I have a single plane intake, so there shouldnt be an issue there. Are there any performance upgrades available for these carbs? Do any parts interchange with the standard 4150 style carb?

The front half is identical to the 850 four barrel so jets and stuff are all interchangeable. They`re 3160 carbs so the secondary side has a metering plate with drilled jets like all the 60 series holleys and you can NOT swap it over to a metering block because the booster feeds are closer together than the four barrels.

Weren't these a "loop hole" carb for Pontiacs in NASCAR?

I believe they were used in NASCAR, I know Motion performance used them. Here is how to make them really work. I dont think these parts are made anymore but if you can find them they do work. Im going to go through this one and put it back in service soon. Take the vacume pod off, add the gears to the linkage and the accelerator pump nozzels to the rear.

There's a write-up in the Holley manual against using those gears on carbs.
Thier reasoning is that they will bind up over time and that could be when your at full throttle

Full throttle is where it usually is,used it for years with no issues. I better keep the kill switch handy!

Just a thought... Those gears look to be 1:1, so im sure a simple linkage could be made to do the same thing in place of the gears.

I had one, just looked at my Holley stash, must have sold it. Did find a really great small block bracket carb I forgot I had though, a 780 vacuum secondary double pumper. I think they only made these for a little over a year sometime in the mid 70s.

They work good. I still have a Car Craft mag from around 1970 where they took a Baldwin Motion 69 Camaro with their warmed over 427 with headers and did a swap from a 780 vac Holley to the 3 barrel carb that was an 850 I believe and it went from 11.90's to 11.60's. That carb was used a good bit back in the 70's and worked good. Ron

i had one on my street/strip, mild 440 powered 4000 lb.'82 D-150, it ran flawless high 11's on pump gas through the mufflers on ET streets.(best of 11:69 @ 112 with a 1.59 60') it was the 950 version. i got the carb for $20 at the indy swap meet. it was missing the "mouse trap" choke & the 3barrel specific vacuum can (didn't need the choke anyway). i bought a rebuild kit for it & along the way i discovered that a 3310 750 vacuum can would bolt right on, so i used that along w/ the holley quick change spring cover. i also plugged the secondary metering plate & then drilled & tapped it for std. holley jets. & replaced the stock accel pump w/ 50cc version. i would not hesitate to re use this carb on my current project in my sig. pic., but it is gonna be blowthrough turbocharged & vac. secondary carbs don't work in that app., so i ended up selling it

There`s no such animal as a vacuum secondary double pumper.

I have two which I use for testing all the time on different 2 plane intake manifolds of all brands.
When used on a single plane, X-style intake the 3rd cylinder back on each side, (5 & 6), tend to run on the lean side unless there is at least 2" of spacer under the carb...

Someday I'll learn how to type and hit the right keys ... not.
