I will be doing a resto on a 72 Demon 340 H code car and have a question as to engine block. Car will not be a total OE resto but I'd like to get as close to possible as money takes me. I have two non original 340 blocks to use for this build...1/73 warranty block no VIN# and a 5/72 block with incorrect VIN#'s. Which do I use and/or do I mill off VIN's. Thanks for your replies! Rick

Milling off a VIN is illegal & it also wipes out some history.

Neither one will ever match your car, so use the one in the best condition.

Use the warranty block and don't add anything to it.

Me personally, I'd rather have the '72 block with incorrect sequential number , but close date code ,instead of a wrong year block .

My reasoning for the warranty block with a later date casting is that (if) it had actually had a warranty replacment back in the day, most often the block would be cast in a later production model year, If you were getting judged at OE either one would get you the same score, with the ICCA OE judging no extra points are given for numbers matching, it was decided to let that slide to leave less incentive for a builder to restamp a block in an effort to gain points. We would not want to promote such an edeavor even indirectly.
