Do you think a X type muffler like the Dynomax #17554 dual 3" in and out would work like a X pipe in the exhaust system? It would be up front and then 3" pipes going back into two 3" welded oval turbo mufflers and then out. It would be on a 71 challenger, 572" hemi. I want it Quiet on the street and the power loss on the street would not matter. On the strip it would all come off

I'm not a fan of that type of X. Tried one years ago on a 340 and it sounded terrible. I love the regular X-pipes.

I have the TTI 3" X pipe under the trans tailshaft and ending at the rear end with regular Ultra Flo's on my race car. Works great, picked up over open headers and I've gotten a lot of compliments on the sound. I can hear my Holley fuel pump at idle, but it gets pretty loud at WOT. I might go to the bullet-type eventually to save some weight and room.
I haven't tried the X-muffler but it just seems like too much going on in one spot to provide optimum results. Seems like you might have to offset the muffler for optimum clearance. Can't see it directly under the driveline somewhere.

I have built this X design and it worked great. We had a very aggressive 340 with well worked J heads. The car had race readies on it so going from open headers to exhaust was a very quick changeover. The car ran almost the same down to the hundredth. Better 60 ft running through the X and mufflers.
The X's you guys seem to like are not really X pipes. The design is more like a H pipe just ellinating the length of the crossover to nothing. This true X design in the dynomax muffler works. You show me a V8 engine that fires two cylinders at once. The X design actually scavenges the exaust. The car we had the X on was extremely quite at low RPM. Stand on it and the noise would come in 4,000 and above. Excellent sleeper. I sold the car and the guy who bought it also bought my 441 arrington headed small block. He commented on how good he thought the system sounded. Real sleeper.
