I have read every thread on this subject possible. I have a '68 440 block, newly bored, honed and stroked. The new crank has grooves where rear main seal sits. Installed new billet aluminum cap. The new split rubber seal leaked around crank (not side seals) when I assembled and ran oil pump with drill. Dropped pan and disassembled cap and cleaned but did not find anything unusual (diameter same as original crank). Installed new Viton split seal and side seals---still leaks around crank.
Anyone know where I can find the old type Rope Seals? Thanks (Pretty frustrated now).

That I have not ever been able to do, even with the old school special rope seal tools...

you can loose the mains with engine on car a little bit to be able to drop it some, and get clearence to fit the upper rope seal.

The sealant is for the sides and ends of the seal retainer. They used to use expanding gaskets in there. Now it's just silicone.

My local Carquest ordered the rope seal for me ($16.00).
The engine had rope seal in it when I rebuilt (after 30 years and approx 90,000miles) and had never leaked.
I will update when I assemble and pressurize...

Is there a difference between the rope and rubber seal aluminum holder?

I consider the state of the art of a BB build is the factory built very early seventies. They did every improvement they could think of before the Feds made them start putting all their engineering into emissions. So, what exactly did the factory do in, say..., 1972? What was the exact assembly line procedure?
You could neglect them forever and a day and they still wheezed on.

Here is what the factory told their dealers to do. This concerns Hemis, I don't know when this fix was incorporated into the BBs.

Installed new billet aluminum cap.

The 440 source rear main seal cap needs to have .010 taken off of the height (where it sits on the block) to get the correct amount of crush on the seal. This is per 440 source. I don't know what brand you used but just a thought.... Good luck

I do have a new retainer from 440Source. This is news to me. What is the finished dimension height?
Just measured mine (from area where bolt sits is 2.980" (+-.001))
Does this measurement sound right?

Mine is in the motor , can't measure it sorry. Call 440 source and pick their brain. I met a guy at a car show this spring that had the rear main leak, he found out about having to mill off the .010 to stop the leak. I just purchased a rear main seal cap from 440 source two weeks ago, i asked them about cutting the .010 off, they said it should be done.

Why they don't make them the correct size???????????

wow! 5.6 hours to drop the exhaust, pull the transmission, drop the oil pan, pull the damper, get the old seal out, put the new seal in, and button it all back up

i'm not an expert mechanic be any means, but i have been at this for a long time.

don't think i'd be seeing all of that in 5.6 hours! of course, a lift does help, along with a helper to do the trans, but still...
