This motor snapped the #8 rod. The broken end took a chunk out of the bottom of the cylinder. I know that notching bores for clearance is done so could the rough edges be ground down? I hate to scrap it. I suppose it could be sleaved. I would appreciate any opinions. Thanks.

Take it to a shop to check out for cracks.

What looks like spider cracking higher in the cylinder bothers me more than the damage at the bottom...but like you said...worse case scenario, it can be sleeved.

You can always put a band aid (sleeve) on it. Take it to a shop and have checked

Why do you call a sleeve a band aide? A sleeve is a very good permanent repair. The aluminum engines come OEM sleeved as do a great many of the diesels.

I've run a couple engines with all 8 sleeved (one to save a bored out Hemi and another to fix a 413 MW with lots of deep rust pitting in all 8) once properly installed they are likely better than before being sleeved.

The sleeves are fantasatic but you better have block checked to have a better idea if a crack may be present extending to water jacket, which the sleeve won't help.

Take the engine apart, smooth the broken edge with a die grinder and take it to your favorite machinist to check for cracks. Most likely it's OK.
