This question is floating on my head for long time, and i havnt had it answered or have seen nobody asking it,

I got a 23 spline 833 out of a 383 68 b body car, and i really want to ask,

if is posible to conver this trany to a 18 spline unit whitout having to change anything but the input shaft and front bearing retainer?

I know some comes with diferent gear ratios,

but is there a company that makes the befie 18 spline to fit the 23 spline unit?

are the 23 spline internals and 18 spline internals the same exept for the gear ratios?

Thanks in advance!

output shaft is also diff, I believe most of the internals are diff too.

The answer is - NO. The pitch on all the gears is different.

18 spline gears are cut straighter. not interchangeable.

The output SHAFT is the same, but all the gears are different and cannot be mixed-n-matched. You could use the small 307 front bearing, but would have to buy the rare 66 18-spline bearing retainer.

2 things do not interchange on them.

The gears and the Bearing retainer.

Case, shafts, syncros, etc can all interchange as long as you get the correct bearing retainer. The gears will fit in any case as long as the correct bearing are there.

But one you change the whole gearset out you pretty much changed all the internals.

yes, synchros do interchange.

No , the mainshaft is the same for either trans .

It's more than just the spline count of the input shaft that makes the 18 spline trans stronger .

Should be able to buy that piece as an aftermarket billet piece ?

OK so Basiclly i need the cluster gears and the whole gears with the imput shaft in order to convert it to a stronger 18 spline unit, I was reading, and the mainshaft and output shaft are the same as well as the cluster gear shaft, the only output shaft that changes are the old short shaft A-body 833 trany that uses the small spline count output shaft like a 904 auto trany but the rest uses the same 30 spline 727 style one and newer short tailshaft A-body 833 also uses the 30 spline 727 style!

Ok, BASICALLY ... you need to forget about screwing around with this thing. Sell the 23-spline and put the $$ towards an 18-spline. Do you honestly think you're going to find the 18-spline gears "loose" other than new ... dream on buddy! An then you'll still be bastardizing the unit by using the 307 bearings.

Yes, its nice to take on some challenges but this one will cost you more time and money to piece together ... if you ever get there.

I know what you mean and yeap with a litlle more i'll get a GR-5 clutch assisted G-Force trany, and really i dont care of bastardizing a 833 as long as i found the parts for cheap,By the way Brewers have the gear set for 840 something, i can put it together myself, but i was just asking, i will use my 23 spline trany the way it is and if it fails then i'll better buy a G-Force unit and done with it!

I believe so. I researched when I had my 66 hemi trans that was missing the bearing retainer. I wound up selling the trans and bellhousing when I decided that my next project (this was before I got my Barracuda convertible in 2006) would get an automatic so that my wife could drive it, too.

That would be the best thing to do , or just buy an 18 spline trans and take the guts and put them in your 23 spline trans .

I think you could swap these into a 23 spline box if you didn't mind the gear ratios. You may still need a bearing retainer.

Passon 18 spline overdrive gear set

It appears he is wanting an 18 spline in an A-body.

A bodies a used shorter trans and the factory didn't make 18spline A-body transmissions. (Hemi Hurst Barracuda's not included)

No way to do that except buying one built, doing it your self or dealing with a B/E body trans in an A body modifications.

Why the do YOU care ?

First the guy asked an question and you answered it , when he asked another question YOU decided to interject your opinion instead of answering his question. And now you are asking me a stupid question that doesn't answer the OP's question.

No this is not true , all the iron case 833 I have had were all 30 spline , only 904 sized A body trans I have seen is the alum OD case trans .
