Finally got some good weather. After the cam swap, everything has stayed the same except the carburetion. Went from the brown secondary spring (medium heavy) to the purple spring (medium light). That's what that cam needed, more fuel and air. The engine now comes unglued off idle to 6k! With 275/60/15 tires I had to pull my foot off the throttle some, it blew the tires off so bad. And that's with a torque converter that flashes to about 2500 RPM's now. That is an awesome cam. Sounds mean and runs mean. Of course it's a 383, but now a hard running 383.

BTW, I use this to adjust the secondary spring. I have the adjustment out all the way for full response. When I get a chance I'm going to switch the purple spring for the (light) yellow spring, just to see.

Love it!

PS, the carb is the 3310 Holley, currently has 70 primary jets, green accelerator cam, 35 discharge nozzle, purple secondary spring, on an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake with a half inch, four hole spacer.

Glad you got it figured out. I had to change the spring as well to fine tune the 3310.

You're right. I'm pleased how much power it has off idle now with the spring change. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

In fact, I may need to invest in some sticky tires instead.

There's only one size for the 383. 229/242 at 0.050, .518 lift with 107 LSA installed at 102°.

What was your old cam? Did you do anything else during the cam swap other than carb and tuning.

Tell us the differences you noticed? Also differences in idle and cruise sound level?

I really like before and after tests to confirm changes. You have time slips to confirm the butt-0 meter? I'm in no way saying it does not run stronger(I'd expect that with the cam you ran before the swap),but I'm just a testing kind of guy. Glad you like it.

Cam I took out was the XE262H Comp Cam. 218/224 at 0.050, 462/470 lift with 110 LSA. Night and day difference.

Whiplash cam sounds really healthy. Comp Cam was rather mild sounding. Basically like a stock 383 Road Runner would sound.

I run an X pipe which evens out the pulses some. If I were running nothing but dual exhaust with no X pipe the Whiplash would sound really rough. It still sounds rather mean.

The Whiplash cam smooths out by 1500 RPM's. Cruise is nice. Even at higher RPM's the engine exhaust sounds meaner. The only thing I had to change with the new cam was carburetion. Engine has a good shake at idle.

But I tell ya, the engine cranks hard and quick from idle to 6k now.

No time slip. Has nothing to do with the butt meter. There is so much difference that it's impossible to misunderstand the improvement. The engine winds up much, much faster and stronger. It buzzes up to 6k like there's nothing to it. With the Comp Cam I could spin the rear tires about 30 feet, tach would jump up to about 3500 RPM's. Today I hit the throttle (once I got the carb tuned in) and had to lift because the engine went to 5500 RPM's right off the bat. Like I was on wet asphalt.

I've had days like that. Sounds like a good result.
