its so tight, it feels like a spool going around a slow tight corner. Sometimes you can feel it load up as the car is trying to corner, then it will let loose all at once with a very unhealthy sounding pop. I've tried changing gear oil, and adding more friction modifier. I've checked my axle end-play, everything is good there. I'm ready at this point to pull the pumpkin this winter and take a look at it. Is there a way to loosen it? This is essentially a new unit. Has a couple thousand miles on it max. did this a little when it was fresh, I thought it would loosen up, but seems to be getting worse (tighter) now, two years later.

I'll pass on that offer. I actually dig it when it chirps the inside tire around a corner, but the bang when it lets go worries me.

Did you use fluid with the additive? Any chance there is something funky with spider pinions or cross shafts?

It's an 8-3/4" unit. I did not rebuilt it, I purchased it brand new. I have been using valvoline 80-90 gear oil with Ford Motorsport friction modifier. There has been friction modifier in the rear end since the S-G unit was new.
As far as the spider pinions.... I have not yet removed the center section, so I have no idea. I did check and adjust the axle endplay this past summer. Didn't seem to have any effect.
So it sounds as though there is no way to loosen the preload that is on the clutchpack (??). I suppose I'll just dive into it and see what I find. Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem, it was almost like driving with a spool. First make sure you have two thin plates like Dr. Diff referred to. Next when I took mine apart I could see scuff marks or light galling on some of the plates. I used a fine Scotchbrite pad in my small pneumatic angle grinder and buffed each disc and reassembled it using friction modifer [ NAPA sells Xtrack } instead of gear oil. Naturally you need to use at least one full tube of friction modifer when you fill the rear end as well. Now it works as good as any clutch limited slip can. Equal grip to both tires in a straight line with really good lock up and still enough give to go around tight corners without chatter.
100% also when reassembling the unit buy an extra bottle of the ford friction modifyer and coat each one of the plates with the stinky goo (wear gloves), this will prevent the plates from galling together on the initial break-in run until the oil can work it's way inbetween them. I don't think they do that initially at the factory when they are assembling them.
