Overdrive to me only makes sense for cars geared for the quarter mile i.e. 4.10's and higher...Id love to see how soon someone would break even in gas savings after buying this transmission and putting it in a resto car with 3.23's or 3.55's...would take an awefully long time unless your are roadtripping constantly...

I disagree-

1) Perhaps "modern" cars (does my 1998 Ram qualify?) have spoiled me but I find buzzing down the highway at 3500 rpm both limiting and audibly annoying. And this is in a car with 3.55 gears.

2) Gas savings isn't an issue (in my case), it would be more about making the car more pleasent to drive so I drive it more!

Yep.

Besides, some of the "savings" depends on how much highway you drive. I drive 28 miles one way to work, averaging 60-65 mph. I would love to drive my Duster to work everyday. Haven't done the math, but if 75% of my time is at highway speed, I would save at a faster rate.

My Duster isn't worth $4300 even if it is a 1 of 586 4 speed Duster 360s built in '74, but not having to cut the floor to put a 5 speed in is more than worth it to me. I have an R154 in my storage unit right now that I could swap in. Just need a clutch, pilot setup and driveshaft. If I didn't have to hack the center of the floor out it wouldn't be an issue, but I do and so it is.

I want one BAD!

Trying to find a place that will pay me $4300 for a kidney right now....

I had a 5 speed in my car this past summer...Drove 4000 miles, and the gas savings with the overdrive (cruising at 1600 on the highway) was definatly not noticeable. Friends with converter slipping, bigger gears, smaller tires, and no overdrive, were filling up just as much as me...When i did the math, it didn make it worth it to me.

By no means am i bashing this transmission. In fact with Jamie's rep, im sure its nothing short of AWESOME Im just saying, at 4300 dollars, its a little steep imo, and if im going to spend that much, id much rather spend it on something else

thats just my ...if it hurts feelings, ah well

So Matt when can you find a used TKO that hasn't been beat to death and can just be bolted in without a major overhaul? Most TKO boxes were used in high performance applications and a used one usually means "used up"

So how many people here really give a rat's behind about gas mileage? The only reason I want that 5th gear is to save the wear and tear on my driveline when on the highway. If you want mileage, get a Prius. If you're concerned about using gas, park it for an extra weekend each month. Otherwise, I want my 5 speed!

Hey Gus, like i said, patience is key! lol ive come across atleast a dozen TKO's with very low miles, only reason for the sale is because the usual "want an auto, can't drive stick for beans". Ive had guys send me internals pics as well, stuff looks great. Only reason i didnt go TKO is the fact that i dont 1500 for a transmission with all the other stuff happening to the car right now (let alone 4300 lol). Otherwise, i would have gone that route in a heartbeat

You obviously don't care about mileage since like you said your the type of guy to build a car with credit card in hand. Being interested in OD for "wear and tear" goes hand in hand with gas mileage- those low rpms as we all know are also going to save you gas...

It's pretty evident that everyone wants a 5 speed for a different reason, some more sensical than others...Seems like some just want it to say "ive got a 5 speed" LOL

1500 for a used TKO

I thought the main problem with the used tremecs (other than the necessary floor/torsion bar crossmember mods) is that they won't take that much HP and your shifter will pop through the floor nowhere near stock. Don't the companies that sell the tremec kits have their own shifter mechanisims they only sell with their trans kits to put the shifter where it should be?

Just because you toss in an overdrive doesn't mean it will put your engine into a "sweet spot" for better mileage. Got to cam and build for the gears, or gear for the build.

Ive never heard that one before, atleast not in an a-body. Ive seen more than one tremec install on the net and in person where the shifter came up in the perfect spot

maybe with the other body styles its a problem?

Exactly, who gives a ratts but about fuel mileage and wear and tear on the driveline. These are Mopar muscle cars, they are made to be drove hard and put up wet.I dont know who all cruises on the highway but I do my cruisin on the strip and I dont need 5 gears going to red light to red light.I dont care to get my hands dirty so If I want to make a very long trip somewhere Ill just pull out the 391 gears and put in the 323.$4300 is a chunk of change and I aint saying I will not buy one but until this tranny has been tested and used for a year Im not buying one,I dont care if it was made by Santas Elves.Im going to give a look at the Mcleod tranny to after its been out for a year also.I talked to Paul Lee last week and he promised it would be under $3,000

I "give a rats behind about gas mileage and driveline wear".

If you don't, it must be because you don't drive your car much and use it as a conversation piece.

I guess running a lower gear than you currently do never occured to some of you.

Let me guess, the whole time you were putting your car together or when you bought it you were thinking about,"I hope that baby gets 20 MPG and the drivetrain good for 100,000 miles".Give me a break

Actually it has been good for over 100K with routine repairs. Maybe you do poor quality builds that don't last. I try for quality if at all possible.

Some of us actually drive our cars. You should try it sometime, it's fun.

I rolled up 8K last year and 3K this year since I had a lot going on.

20 MPG would have been great, I only averaged 15-16. Are you really foolish enough to say that you want to waste fuel?

Waste fuel?
This whole hobby is about needless waste of time, energy and comodities.
What are you thinking?
following that thinking... what is the purpose of going down the strip? or running a 4 bbl.
What a waste of energy... time and effort.
maybe we should get rid of the auto and use wind power to sail to the grocery store.
Its all about consumption, exploitation and "I have something you dont".

Come on Jamie, pics of a teardown.

What a silly thing for you to post. If I get 20 MPG, instead of 15, that is that many more miles I can drive and enjoy my car.

That was the point.

with the amount of driving you do, this would be a trivial amount of savings compared other costs of owning and working on a classic car.

i dont see the benefit for most people unless you do a lot of driving at highway speeds.

good news is that people are offering products for these old cars...that kind of gets lost in the tribal debates that often arise here.

Some people

Why would I want to spend more on gas? WHY????

Why is that so hard to understand for some of you?

If you like to waste fuel, send me the money instead.

A guy makes a product that we didn't have before, actually builds it in our country, and Moparts members can't wait to down it. That is pretty sad.

BTW Bo, you drive the Charger, not me. Make that, NOT drive actually.
