i need some help on setting cam and crank timing on a big block 400 engine , i am a bit confused as if the marks to the cam and crank should face each other.or the cam at 12 o' clock and crank at 12 o'clock.. whats the procedure..does it have to be at top dead center first....and pointing at the number 1 piston or number six.. a bit confused please help...thanks guys

crankshaft 12 and cam shaft 6. Piston position will take care of it self when lining up dot to dot.
Cam at 12 and crank at 12 will actually end up the same as the crank turns 2 times for every one of the cam.

And when both dots are at 12 oclock, set distrib at #1 cyl firing.

This is an important point. It's obviously more accurate "to see" lining up the cam at 6 o'clock and the crank at 12 o'clock

THIS POSITION is no6 ready to fire. So all you REALLY need to do--if you don't rotate the engine afterwards---is to drop the dist in pointing to no6

easy

Really a moot point IMO. during assembly the engine may well be turned over several times after the timing chain is installed and before engine is installed in the vehicle and ready to fire. Most that I know don't install the distributor till after teh engine is in place and then install accordingly.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

I know Don, but many novices wrongly assume cam dot at 6 oclock, and crank dot at 12 oclock, means it is setup for #1 firing. That screws up many minds.

Years ago a customer brought in a Ford Y block out of an old boat. The rebuilder went through the engine and the owner could not get it to fire. Finally asked me to take a look. Turns out the installation was reverse rotation---that is until the rebuilder got done.

Yea, my mind was screwed up for just a little while

6 & 12 o'clock lets you use a straightedge whereas 12 and 12 o'clock would not (crank snout in the way) and I have no clue as to why cams are not ground so that is #1 compression like most people assume it is and I have yet to see a manual that tells you that it is on #6 firing & not #1 and way back I lost a pole position because we couldn't figure out why it would not fire and I could not get back out onto the track in time
