After refreshing the entire dash with all the stuff attached to the firewall there is one thing left, that I cannot remember how it was before disassembling:

Where does the speedometer cable run through?

I'm talking about a 1970 Challenger 440 with 4 speed MT.

The most questionable part is from the firewall to the speedometer - how does it pass the pedals? Does it run between brake and clutch pedal? On what wide of the clutch pressure rod? Where is it fixed there - is it fixed at all??

Also in the engine bay I'm not sure. Does it run between brake valve (and all the brake lines) and fender on the left side? Or goes it between the brake lines? Or on the right side of the brake stuff?

It passes the Z-bar right on the outside/ left side where the frame is, right? There is a clip to fix it to the frame - is that clip exactly under the Z-bar?

Hmm - let me extend this: Where does the (double) wire run to the transmission backup light switch? Along with the speedo-cable??

I add a pic just for fun - it does not show the questionable cable. Just to show that I found where to put the rest of things...

Not sure if it's correct, but Ive always run it thru the steering column support bracket (if thats whats its called) it has the upright rectangular opening, and I put the speedo cable right thru the center. Sorry I dont have a pic. Maybe someone else does.

Placing it on that "bent edge" on the left side of the column support would make sense...

But then one must fix it there or it will sooner or later be smashed by the clutch pedal stop-cam. So was there some kind of clip when it was stock? Else one must drill a hole to fix it with a cable tie.

And to guide it there - will it pass the clutch pushrod on the left side... or shall I say "under" or "in front of" that pushrod?

@ricomondo: Sure that's for a rally dash? The speedo is on the left side of the column support... I'll take a look again but can't really visualize.

I've had it already in at least three different positions - and everytime it looked just odd... ...while lying on the back in the empty car for LONG, shaking head under the dash in disbelief, having just no more ideas...

Perhaps these 5 pictures will help you?
With this routing of the cable, the clutch pedal does not have any interference.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

That's a good one! Looks very great... I'm gonna try that and I think that's the way to go.

Funny - I've never got the idea to guide it OVER the clutch pedal.

THANKS!

Last one - I have to still get a shot of the cable inside of an original car for you.

Great, thanks!

Hmmm - where will you route the backup-light cable?

There is a clip that goes on the bellhousing, down the trans to (two or three - seen both) clips on the trans side cover bolts. The auto's usually have a clip on one of the top bolts as well.

I know this post is about a 1970 but for those who have 72-74 cars and are wondering how the cable is attched to the floorpan...

The newer cars don't have a clip welded to the floor. They use a white plastic strap... the same strap that's used on the DS inner fender to hold wiring. I assumed that the strap clips into a hole in the small frame to floorpan bracket. In the above pics, there is a brake line clip in that hole. I don't know if the newer cars used a brake line clip at that point or not. That is the only place I can see to mount the strap.

Great, thank you!

No idea who sells that clip.

It's the first time, I see how this linkage looks - the one that locks the ignition key over the "shifting tube" when there is a manual transmission. I assume that thing is often absent - as it is in my car...

You are indeed correct.
A lot are missing. Who wants to put the car in reverse, just to get the key out. A pain in the @ss if you ask me. Especially if your A833 is a little worn out and is hard to get in reverse. Or those straight cut gears are not lined up exactly.

There are originals for sale (usually not complete) and also reproductions.

Wow - Never seen those frame rail clips on E-Bodies - Only B-Bodies. I don't believe any of my cars have ever had them. Time for a closer look.

I think Chrysler still sells them - haven't checked in a while.

I have those clips

I also have seen the same whitish looms which hold the wiper hose to the fire wall on the passenger side on an e-body.

When you say you have those clips - do have them on an E-Body or you have them in your pocket trying to use them at Tim Horton's?
Yes - A couple of mine have the white straps too.

Here is where it broke off....

The car with the clip is a `cuda340 3 speed hard top built at Hamtramck SPD 203 that had 34,000 original miles when I purchased it.
It was almost all original.
