I've got my little 341" mini-stroker aluminum rod motor coming out to make room for the new 414. Heads are going off to Ryan next week so (as usual) I got to thinking that with pretty much just a piston swap and a rebalance I could move this 3.55" forged crank/6" aluminum rod bottom end right into a fresh 340 block and get myself a very high-winding big bore solid roller cam motor at the ready for not a whole lot of extra coin

I was going to sell the whole short block motor ...but now I'm thinking the sum of the parts in-hand is a really solid foundation for a 7500+ rpm screamer...besides if I build it it can just sit there in the corner until a killer deal on a set of W5's drop into my lap
If the motor comes out sweet enough I could pull the 414 and put it in a D-100 pick-up and use it to tow with just kidding!

I love strokers don't get me wrong... but I also love high strung small-blocks that rev like comp eliminator motors too. The 341" was more than adequate to have fun but the 318 bore limits getting any kind of serious (much over 500hp) race head on a bottom end that can stand a whole lot more. But it was the one I had and it was a great idea to build a 340 'the hard way'. The race bottom-end I have in hand is way over-kill potential-wise for a 318. But with a 4.08-ish 340 block at 372 or so inches (that will swallow a 2.08" intake valve) it might just be the best of both worlds...more than adequate bottom end grunt combined with sky-high revability.

Thoughts? Should I go for it?Decisions....decisions

i like your idea, but revin a stock block to 7500 is alot, esp a 59deg block if u stroke it big its a hell of alot less rpm..my 418 made peak power at 5700rpm watta sleeper it was.

I hear you buddy, but as an 18 yr old kid (30 yrs argo)I begged and borrowed to buy a set of tricked W2's and with a solid Isky I used to rev my little 340" (heavy TRW forged bottom end and all) motor to all that RPM and higher (tell-tale read 8100 more than once ). It's amazing (thanks god!) my feet are still attached rowing that 4 speed like ol Ronnie sox... without a scatshield!! Too young to know better I reckon!!

So I think this one with better heads and much lighter/stronger (and girdled) bottom end ought to hold up all right

You sound like me. I have been building a 414 stroker for the cuda for years slowly gathering parts and getting a little machine work done at a time as I could afford it. In the mean time I have had a 318 a 402 another 318 and a 360 in the car that were all built from scratch just so I could drive the car in the mean time.

In light of all that I would say sell the 318/340 thingy and finish the 414 you long for.

What about my 318 block? it went over 500hp...

610rwhp/513rw ft. lbs.

I think the 318 block can take more than most give it credit. We will just have to see how long mine lasts.

I do like the idea of the 372 though! Good back up engine1

The 318 block will handle just as much power as a 340, I have a few of both in the garage right now and can see no differance in the thickness of any part of them except the caps themselvs.

Kenny,

Yeah I hear ya bud but that's a 4" arm motor, no?

If you go back to my old post I had thought about doing this 372" originally and dropping the 4" into the 318, it was kind of a game-day decision to go with the 414.

I know I could put a moderate solid roller in the 341 instead of the 236/240 @.050 HR that's in there and get more power up and over 6500....like I said the bottom end can take a lotta more. The 341 was just an economical way to package a bunch of off the shelf parts to make a reliable 430+ hp combo, I'd build another one in a heartbeat.

When Lenny put the Cage in the Rocky I realized that it added another ~100 pounds to the combo, and the 414 deal just fell into my lap at a good price so...I guess I'm such a pack-rat I hate to sell things when I can come up with some other inventive use for them.

It is a 4.25" stroke. 4.03" bore. The bigger stroke is easier on the bottom end to make the same HP as a small stroke engine would be. I just wanted to bug ya about the 500hp comment. It all depends on what the combo is eh!

I would like to do a small stroke RPM machine in the future too.

100% true! My current 318 block is kind of unique. No date code, and for some reason, it has the 340 caps. It just gets a little more expensive when you cut a 318 to a 4.03" bore. Cheaper than trying to find a good 340 block I guess.

Agreed! Your rig is moving pretty good with that big inch small block Eh? What are you turning it to?

We pulled our 292ci contest engine on the dyno to 8200rpm several times

Kenny, your 4.03" bore 318 is just a 360 with undersized mains

Try one with a realistic .040 over 3.91 bore....that would be a freak with a 4.25 stroke! with valves that fit the bore it might rev to 5000

Yeah Mike let's hear about this 292 but feel free to comment on MY idea so you're not completely 'jacking' :

Why only go .040" over when there is the thickness to go much further?

Anyway, i like the 372" idea, and I think it could make some killer power if you can make it breathe up top. I think I have a few of our main cap girdles on the shelf at the shop if you are interested in that. They require machine work to the caps, but I don't think your scared of that.

I would like to hear about this 292 as well!

Wow, I'm a complete thread jacker now

It's our Mopar Muscle/Amsoil engine challenge engine based off a 273. We DNF'd at the contest because a thin head casting(exhaust port) cracked on previous test pulls. We thought it was a head gasket issue(long story) so we still had water out #7 at Comp. We redyno'd here and made 472hp. Diamond pistons, Ford 5.4 rods, stock forged crank. We used LA heads, drilled them for oversize magnum rocker studs, used Jomar girdles and Jim Laroy fabricated brackets to mount the girdles to the LA outer and center shaft mounts. We wanted to find the upper end of the valvetrain stability so we kept pulling it past 7000. We made several pulls and kept pulling to 8200 rpm. It sounded sweet
