I have a stock '64 273 engine, minus the rockers, shafts & pushrods. Can I use those items from a 1981 318 ??

If my memory is correct, the 64 273 has solid lifters. This requires adjustable valvetrain, which is now missing, right?
My guess is that you can use the 318 stuff as long as you change to a new hydraulic cam and lifters. That would probably be cheaper than to try to find the stock adjustable stuff for a fair price.

I did a '65 273 by changing to a Comp hydraulic cam and kit and using later 318 LA pushrods, and rocker setup. Works just fine.

Or you can likely get a good running 318 for free here just for the asking, have 45 more cubes and no one`will be the wiser.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

thanks for the replies. I bought a complete '67 273 locally today for $150. I'll take the rocker assy stuff & part out what I can with the rest of the engine.

IIRC 67 273 is non adjustable rockers and hydro lifters

the 64 is solid lifter cup and ball push rods adjustable rockers

could have a steel crank in both

64 may have closed chamberd heads with small valves

I think 65 is the oddball intake bolt pattern on the 273..1 yr only

Both '64 and '65 have the oddball intake/head setup. The 273 was introduced partway through '64.

ALL 273s had solid lifters through 1967. Hydraulics for 68 and 69.

Also, use the 67 heads so that you have more intake choices, unless you already have the intake you want to run with the early heads.

Have intake and carb from '64 engine & actually had the engine running ,just not very good. Way too much slop in the rockers.
So gonna just change to adjustable & keep going. Thanks guys.

67 was still solid. 273 went to hyd cam starting in 68. Also, the Isky E4 is a good grind for the 273.

I was pretty sure I had a 67 with hydro non adjust rockers

might have been worked on before I gots it

what are the specs on that E4 grind?

uncle had a 273 with a .500 lift something or other that was nasty in the 273,he siad 273 hipo but I thinks it was aftermarket with that lift

I know they can be fast..just ask member "Class of 65" with a record holder 273

Ran a Performer intake on my 65 273 with no problems. You can run a later intake on the early 273, just not the other way around.

There was a 273 Super command i think they called it from the factory .500 lift solid cam and a 750 holley very rare however

The performer or any other later style intake will not bolt directly onto a 65 273 head. Your heads were swapped for later heads or the bolt holes on the intake were wallowed out.

Here's a good 273 combo.

Run a CR of 9.1 to 9.5

E4 Isky solid Cam

Find a set of 920 casting heads (66-67). They flow the best. They flow better running a stainless 1.88 intake valve cut down to 1.82. That way there's no shrouding. If you can't find that casting 302's are a good alternative.

Run a Edelbrock LD4B and a Carter 625. Of course a good ignition and exhaust.

273's make power as long as the RPMs are up. 273's like a lot of gear. For a street A body with a 273 3.91's are a good start.

Good info, thanks. We are staying stock for now. Engine is in a 54 Dodge, traditional style hot rod. Just a cruiser for the old man.
