What is the most gain that you guys have seen from a properly speced converter for your combo? The reason I ask is that we may be going on strike at the end of Dec. at work... I did get the ladder bar kit bought and saved enough cash up to have bad1970dust install it. I was planning on a complete tranny rebuild with a brake...But that may have to wait. There is no doubt that my current converter cannot handle the power that the 512 is putting out...Also talked with three different converter guys and got three different answers!! The cheapest way is that Kenny Ford would rebuild my current PTC that is in the car now. I have no complaints on the PTC...It did what he said behind the 446"....Give me your thoughts, guys!!

IF you are going to be out of work, you need to rethink the car thing for a while. Push it off to the side, and make sure you and your wife are taken care of first. Haven't raced mine in 3 years because of this.

You are going to gain quite a bit by doing the ladder bars first. The convertor? Hard to say. Mike's picked up around a 1/10th, but the consistancy picked up a bunch. Faster you go the harder gains become.

depends on what size you are running now and how far it's out.

Nobody can really say, unless you had a seriously tight converter to start with. Then they might get a vague idea. My personal experience has been gains are small in the tens and faster, unless the converter is seriously messed up. Main thing is it is going to be a few bucks to get one built to handle a brake and live behind a stroker. No short cuts allowed. I had a ten inch TCI I had them redo for a brake and it ate itself in short order. The insides looked like someone beat it up with a big ball peen hammer. $500 gone. So the rep of the builder is your best insurance, go with his recommendations.
Ted , you like to bracket race and win more than go after the last .01 in performance I will bet, so going on the loose side with a big motor will greatly help that. At least that is what I have seen. I went from about 5500 rpm to 6400 flash on my deal, picked up about .05 or so despite the fact that I shift at 7100 or 7200 rpm. It also is deadly consistent when I do my job.
Good luck on the job situation! Would like to come to CFR and meet in person next spring!

PTC can adjust it if you go that way.thay adjusted mine for the blower with a steel stator, balooning plate from a N/A 500hp TC.
good luck with the job and all!

If they don't hit the mark with the proper stall it can make a night & day difference,at least for me it has. My TCS will flash to 5400 behind my 408 and be dead on consistant.I did however lose the sprag one year and some one told me they had closed shop so i bought another TC. This converter hasn't matched it at all,1st time too tight with 4800 flash then 2nd time too loose with 6200 flash.Of course later found that TCS was still around and got it fixed
This winter the motor will get a dyno and give the converter guy the correct TQ reading.3rd times a charm right.

I would give PTC first shot at it, Kenny has always come through for me. On my 540 I went from 9.70's with an 8" converter (that I was driving through at 800 ft) to 9.40's with a 5800 stall 9 1/2" converter. I had that same 9 1/2" loosened to about 6200 and dropped down to 9.20's/9 teens with no other changes, so several tenths are possible.

I agree though, if you may go on strike, don't spend one penny on that car. Parts can always be bought later when/if things work out......

As stated already it depends on how off your current one is...

Thanks,Mark! The PTC is a 4200 9 1/2" unit. I did talk to Kenny and discussed it. He says he can make it work behind the 512. My job isn't bad...Just crappy hours and a hundred mile round trip a day. They sure picked a bad time of the year for contract!!

you can probably make it work, but going from what ever it ends up being I bet an 8" 5600ish/or more converter would pick you up at least a .10 or more thats providing you can make it hook. just my guess

I run a 7inch from ptc and you can see 5 to 6 tenth, from what I have tried, but it depends on how far it is off..takes alot of time to get one right..mine is like 3% slippage..but I have had it adjusted 10 times or more

In my case, it was .2 and 2 MPH. As they say, "Your results may vary!"

Every application is different but years ago I broke one of my 340s and had a 318 in my car , nothing special, little cam ,360 heads, 750 dp etc with 3.91 gears it ran a best of 13.20 with a 10 inch converter. I put in a 8 inch T/A 4600 stall converter and went 12.70s.
