Ok, I'm back to work on this project and picked up and engine and trans from a 64 Polara.
Man am I confused.
Here's what I'm trying to do.
I have a 56 Plymouth with a 2 speed powerflite push button shifter.
I'm putting in a 318 with a 727.
Not sure how to go about the 727 shifting.
I have two 727 transmissions.
a 64 that came from a console shifted car with the cables. I assumed that I could use this transmission with pushbuttons, but after looking at an ebay auction,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...atchlink:top:enIt looks like I need to convert that trans to be able to use pushbuttons.
I have a 727 that was in my Volare that was being shifted by an aftermarket shifter.
My questions are
Assuming I buy the conversion to convert the the 64 trans to pushbutton. Can I adjust my 2 speed cables to shift the 727. Assuming I would never be able to shift into 1st manually. I just need P,R,N,D and I can make a separate lever hidden for the park cable.
I think that 65 Dodge had a 3 speed push button setup that fits in the same dash housing at my 56, I just need to verify and find one. If that's the case, can I get 64 dodge pushbutton cables and install them into the 65 housing and shift the trans.
Or, can I use the later 727 and use an imperial services conversion to either make my 2 speed buttons work or the 65 buttons work. I have a tech email into them....That conversion alone is $400, but does come with new cables.
Part of me says if I can get this setup to work it would be better as if I need a trans down the road for something, the post 66 727's should be alot easier to find than pre 66.
But the cables and conversion to get some used 64 cables and a conversion kit to make the trans push button shiftable is $250.
Anyone been thorough this?
The other question I have is if I get the pushbutton trans all installed in the car, but don't have a driveshaft in. How do I tell if the car is in drive, neutral or reverse. If I try to spin the back of the trans, won't it always spin because of the torque converter slip?
I don't want to go through the expense of getting a driveshaft made if I can't shift the car. Because the two 727 trans have different yokes at the trans. One is ball/trunion and the other is slip yoke.
Thanks,
Nick
