Easy off is used to remove oil stains off your exhaust. I would not use it on aluminum. Eastwood I think has what you need. Caswell also sells a kit to remove and anodize aluminum. Anodizing at home

I stripped the annodizing on a number of parts and then buffed a shine back into them after straightening. Go buy a can of Drano kitchen crystals. Dissolve some with hot water in a container large enough to hold your part. Drop the part in. It will start bubbling like a soda pretty quickly. Within 20 minutes your part will have a gray coating of smut. Take it out and rinse/rub thoroughly. No more annodizing. It's the Sodium Hydroxide (lye) that does the work. Same ingredient in oven cleaner. Trust me, your part won't disappear in the solution and it only takes a few minutes. Pics here: http://70duster440.com/grilleresto.htmlOven cleaner WILL discolor cast aluminum (like a transmission case). The warnings on the can are more about discoloration than destroying the part. Turns dark gray. Oh, and don't forget rubber gloves and face protection as a safety precaution.

The Lye in Easy Off is what removes the anodizing.
It took three applications on my '63 Dodge grille and sitting in the sun for it to all come off.
Don't get the "fume free" it's crap!
After many hours of wet sanding, straightening and polishing:

i've done grills and trim with EZ Off as well. you need the "heavy duty" formula, not the fume free one. leave it of for 20-30 minutes, scrub with a green 3M pad, rinse well, and see what you have. you might have to redo sections, with tougher clear on it, but it works. polish when you're done, and clear coat it again, or it will get dull pretty quick. after polishing, but before clear coating, i've done the black, by masking the grill with "photo frisket" and using an exacto knife to cut out the stripes and letters, then hitting with satin black paint. just make sure the black is compatible with the clear coat you chose.

Do this outside!!! the gas that is given off is pure Hydrogen. last thing you want to do is build up hydrogen in your garage.

How did you guys do the "black out" detailing? Hope I didn't hijack?

Very carefully!
Green masking tape and brand new x-acto knife blades and lots of patience!
Don't cut into the aluminum but just deep enough to get through the tape.
I sprayed some paint in a cup and used a modeling brush to do the tiny areas that only required a drop or two of paint in between the center grille bars.

Here's another example of what you can do with masking and an X-acto knife.
The air cleaner was chrome but getting ugly looking.
I masked off the Edelbrock and blasted it with black wrinkle finish.
I'm pretty much to the point that I hate anything chrome in the engine compartment but I thought this turned out decent.

Great work guys!! Any recommendation on the brand of satin black paint?
What is "photo frisket" and why did you use it instead of masking tape?
Thanks,
Finally getting to mine on the 64.

photo frisket is like clear masking tape, but it comes in sheets. for covering a larger area, then trimming away what you dont need. i also use blue painters tape, and visqueen if i dont have the frisket. i like the frisket, because it's transparent, so you can easily see what you are trimming against, and if there's an air bubble, it's also quite visible. the paints you choose, should be compatible. if you use SEM trim black, use SEM clear, etc. just depends if you are going to use an airbrush, rattle cans or spray gun, and what you're comfortable shooting. i like SEM or PPG, but really anything you are happy with, is best. as mentioned above, i also will use a small detail brush, for getting into tight spots, or detailing emblems, etc.

BTW, my local plating guys (who also do bright dip anodising) quoted me about $70 to strip and reanodise my 71 Challenger headlight bezels, with me taking the parts away to fix inbetween. They stripped them right there on the spot, literally took about 5 mins, and didn't charge me anything on the spot.
So, my point is that it may cost you hardly anything to get them stripped, and it sure is quick and mess free.....just a thought.

I used the aircraft paint remover on my 68 dart front grill removed the silver argent paint/black out paint in a couple mins and rinsed with water never had to buff/shine it,it was super shiny when done but that may not be the same as anodized alum worked great on the grill though just thought i would throw it out there
